2019 – Fyfe Wins Second Brownlow
Nathan Fyfe won the 2019 Brownlow Medal – the second time the Fremantle captain has claimed the AFL’s greatest individual honour in his career.
Fyfe dominated the count polling 33 votes, prevailing over Patrick Dangerfield from Geelong with 27, Brisbane’s Lachie Neale and Carlton’s Patrick Cripps with 26 votes.
Patrick Cripps from Carlton was polling well early on in the count but Fyfe polled consistently throughout the night to ensure his second Brownlow win was a comfortable one.
The Dockers superstar became only the 15th player to win multiple Brownlow Medals, having also won in 2015.
Along with winning the medal for the second time, Fyfe won it in a season where he only played 20 games and in which Fremantle only managed nine wins.
Fyfe also holds the record of being one of two players in AFL/VFL history to have polled more Brownlow votes than games played.
1990 – Green Machine go Back to Back
The Canberra Raiders made it back to back premierships with an 18-14 win over the Panthers in the Winfield Cup Grand Final.
Canberra found themselves 12-0 up early in the game with some Ricky Stuart magic gifting tries for John Ferguson and Laurie Daley.
Penrith came back to trial 10-12 just before half-time but it didn’t scare the green-machine that day.
A quick try from replacement winger, Matthew Wood put Canberra 18-10 up.
Both sides scored three tries each for the match but it was a masterclass from Ricky Stuart – who would win the Clive Churchill Medal and Mel Meningas kicking that was all the difference to ensure the lime milk was flowing in the nation’s capital that night.
