In an Australian first, Ladbrokes has partnered with Racing Victoria, the Moonee Valley Racing Club, Inspired Entertainment and Channel 7 to bring to life the Ladbrokes Greatest Ever Cox Plate.
The concept will pit equine superstars from around the globe and across eras against each other in a virtual race, which will be one of the talking points of the Spring Carnival.
Aligned to celebrate the 100th running of Australia’s WFA Championship, the Ladbrokes Cox Plate at The Valley on Saturday, October 24, Ladbrokes with the assistance of key historical data and cutting-edge animation has assembled one of the greatest horse-racing fields of all time.
Developed by Inspired Entertainment, which is regarded as the world’s pre-eminent virtual sports developer, the race will feature a star-studded 14-strong field of champions such as Australian racing icons Winx, Kingston Town and Phar Lap.
The field includes seven multiple Cox Plate winners and was assembled by an expert panel including Racing Victoria handicapper Greg Carpenter, Ladbrokes Australia chief executive Dean Shannon, Moonee Valley Racing Club CEO Michael Browell, and Timeform CEO and noted historian Gary Crispe.
In a move that is expected to add to the debate, three international wildcards have been included in the field; Frankel, Champion of Europe; American legend Secretariat; and Japanese super sire Deep Impact.
“At Ladbrokes we are racing fanatics,” Shannon said.
“We love the sport’s history, and as the major partner of the Ladbrokes Cox Plate, we wanted to produce something that served as an appropriate tribute to the 100th running of the great race.
“We can’t wait to see how some of the great champions of the past stack up against the likes of Winx, and we hope by introducing Secretariat, Deep Impact and Frankel to the mix it will only add to the intrigue and interest.”
MVRC CEO Michael Browell said the running of the Greatest Ever Cox Plate, would add another highlight to the Ladbrokes Cox Plate Carnival.
“The Ladbrokes Cox Plate is Australasia’s greatest race and has an illustrious honour roll that is the envy of the racing world,” Browell said.
“We are thrilled to partner with Ladbrokes and Inspired Entertainment on creating the Greatest Ever Cox Plate and are excited to see how these great champions from different eras line up over the famous 2040 metres at The Valley.
“By compiling all of the key historical data and expert opinion, we hope to answer the age-old question as to who is the greatest Cox Plate champion across the past 99 years.”
Betting will be available to Ladbrokes customers through an exclusive market.
To meet regulatory requirements the market will be restricted to a maximum $20 fixed win bet and will not be available in some states.
To ensure the credibility and integrity of the race, no one at Ladbrokes will be able to view the race or the result before it runs live on 7TWO on the evening of Friday, October 23. Ladbrokes will not know the outcome until the race is run and won.
The race and its result will be based on historical data, which recognised form experts Timeform have researched and built out to create a designated rating for each horse. This data and a fixed starting price will be added to race creator Inspired Entertainment’s algorithm to deliver the race result.
Inspired Entertainment (Nasdaq: INSE) is a world leader in game content and technology, operating in 35 countries across the globe.
Inspired Entertainment Chief Commercial Officer for Virtual Sports, Steve Rogers said the company was thrilled to work with Ladbrokes and key partners to create the Greatest Ever Cox Plate.
