1979 – The First 3 Pointer!

Chris Ford of the Boston Celtics became the first man to score a three-point shot in NBA History on this day back in 1979.

The NBA had adopted a three-point line for a one year trial for the 1979-80 season, which many at the time saw as an unnecessary gimmick.

The season opener between the Celtics and Houston at Boston Garden aslo marked the debut of a young rookie by the name of Larry Bird.

1968 – Mexico City Games Begin

The Mexico City Olympic Games got underway on this day back in 1968, the first games to be staged in Latin America and in a Spanish-speaking nation.

Political tension was high at the time, but the games went on.

The Opening Ceremony was a far more simple set up to what we see today with lots of colourful baloons and the stadium which was meant to only hold 63,000 fans managed to take in 100,000 spectators for the occassion.

A prominent feature of the 1968 Opening Ceremony was that it was the first time a woman – Enriqueta Basillo an 80 meter Mexican hurdles national champion lit the Olympic Cauldron.
