What a Spring it was.
It was off to a crawling start, with the Mornington Jockey scandal and Covid rearing its ugly head, but by the end of the Flemington Carnival, we can’t help but think it was a brilliant Spring with loads of highlights.
Some of our favourites are below.
We’ve covered this before, but it’s pretty bloody exciting to be witnessing what Verry Elleegant is doing.
She mixed her form throughout the Spring, but her Melbourne Cup victory was simply breath taking.
We have no doubt that the Autumn will see some battles with Melbourne Cup runner up Incentivise, who is well on his way to being one of Australia’s favourite horses as well.
Our middle distance & staying ranks have been sured up somewhat with Spanish Mission & Armory now being based in Australia, while Zaaki continues to dominate in his contests.
Hopefully we see these brilliant horses fight out some unforgettable contests in the Autumn.
The New Kid On The Block in a year where our 3yos don’t look to have much depth, Anamoe was the clear standout.
His racing pattern might get him beat every now and then, but when he races at the elite level, he is well and
truly in the thick of it.
His controversial 2nd in the Cox Plate was arguably the most tense moment of the Spring, and even though he didn’t get the result, he lost no admirers.
Honourable mentions to Artorius who might be a prep away & Home Affairs, who absolutely dominated the Coolmore.
Our Best Jockeys Stood Up
It’s fair to say that everyone thought that the Spring might have been in trouble when high profile jockeys Jamie Kah, Mark Zahra & Ben Melham were among those caught up in the Mornington party scandal.
But gee whiz, what an opportunity for the jockeys that might not have had the chances to show their worth previously. Brett Prebble & Daniel Moor immediately Spring to mind, with the pair sharing 8 Group 1 victories between them.
To give some context, this time last year Prebble was riding at around a 1% winning strike rate throughout the Spring. Add in some Ollie roaring & Jmac strutting his stuff, it was a brilliant display from our best jocks.
