Group 1 racing moves to WA this weekend with the Railway Stakes running at Ascot.
Whilst there is a bit of negative dialogue being thrown around due to interstate horses not being able to cross the border to compete, we thought it would be nice to focus on The Best From The West.
Damien Oliver
I’m sure most racing fans know that Ollie grew up on the tough streets of Perth.
Fast-forward 30 years and he was won 126 Group 1s, including 3 Melbourne Cups, 4 Caulfield Cups, 2 Cox Plates & a Golden Slipper.
Not bad for a bloke from out West!
Daniel Ricciardo
Competing against the world’s elite in the Formula One, Daniel Ricciardo has won 8 races from 207 starts, his latest being the 2021 Italian F1 GP.
He hits the podium 16% of the time and does his nation bloody proud every time he polishes off a shoey.
Brings a tear to the eye.
Sam Kerr
Arguably the best footballer in the world?
Scores goals for fun?
Is an absolute superstar for Chelsea in the English Premier League?
Hails from Freo? Sam Kerr is an absolute must on any list talking about gems from WA.
She’s one of our country’s greatest current athletes.
Northerly
Almost $10m AUD in prize money, a two-time Cox Plate and Caulfield Cup winner, Northerly was an absolute gem of a racehorse.
Bred and trained in WA by the legendary Fred Kersley, the gelding was a punters’ favourite due to his ability to win when looking all but defeated.
“The Fighting Tiger” he was aptly nicknamed.
A champion of the turf.
Dennis Lillee
Arguably Australia’s greatest ever pace bowler, the great DK Lillee was loved nation wide for his fierce competitiveness, fiery temperament and impressive moustache.
Forming a devastating opening bowling partnership with Jeff Thomson, the two were lethal with the new ball.
Finishing his Test career with a then record 355 wickets, Lillee is one of many Aussie cricket greats to come from WA.
There’s a stack of other gems to come from the West, let us know who should have been on the list on our socials below!
