The inception of The Everest in 2017 brought with it an intrigue into the spring carnival that we had never had before thanks to the unique conditions of the race.
A limited number of slots are available for the richest race on turf in the world and as much conversation surrounds who will take out the race as it does who will actually make the field.
The Moir Stakes, the next edition of which takes place Moonee Valley this Saturday, hasn’t been a good guide to the winner of The Everest but it has produced plenty of horses to gain one of the slots.
Run over 1000m at The Valley, The Group 1 Moir Stakes is a launching pad for many sprinters throughout the spring feature races.
The winner or placegetter of the Moir Stakes has been selected to run in The Everest in six of the eight editions of the race.
2017
She Will Reign won The Moir Stakes but finished second last in The Everest in 2017.
2018
Both the winner and runner up of the Moir Stakes gained a slot in The Everest and Viddora and Brave Smash finished 10th and 8th respectively.
2019
Nature Strip won The Moir in 2019 and finished fourth in The Everest. Sunlight finished third at The Valley and then 10th at Randwick.
2020
Godolphin horse Trekking was narrowly defeated by Pippie in the Moir Stakes, but it was enough to get him a spot in The Everest where he finished a respectable fourth.
2021
Similar to a year previous, Trekking placed in The Moir and then finished sixth in The Everest.
2024
The Golden Slipper winner Lady Of Camelot returned as a three-year-old to finish third in the Moir Stakes last year and then went within 1.4 lengths of Bella Nipotina in The Everest.
So which horse from the 2025 Moir Stakes will gain a slot in The Everest and how can we best take advantage?
Baraqiel is the early favourite for the race on Saturday at The Valley and is $51 in The Everest betting, and the Grahame Begg trained Niance, as well as Alabama Lass are on the next line of betting and also $51 in futures betting at Royal Randwick.
Or maybe Jedibeel can get the job done over the short course at The Valley and then win The Everest at $101!
