Stradbroke Season rolls on again this Saturday at Eagle Farm as the 3YOs get a chance to lap up the limelight in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks.
In Sydney, the Bob Charley AO Stakes pays tribute to a legend of the racing industry at Randwick, while we’ve got a wide-open program featuring nine races at Flemington.
With plenty to dissect, Craig Sheppard, Ryan Cook and Jared Timms get stuck into the Saturday form.
Saturday’s Previews
Craig Sheppard
It was basically game over when NOW IS THE HOUR (9) drew the outside barrier last start but to his credit, he ran a huge race.
The Tony Gollan-trained gelding was forced to work overtime three-wide the trip and he over-raced at stages but still fought bravely to finish 1.61 lengths third.
He’ll appreciate a return to Eagle Farm where his record stands at two wins and a third from four starts over this course and distance.
The barrier draw was much kinder to him here which should see Tommy Berry land in a prominent position.

| Racing well recently. At the latest run made ground from midfield; 2nd of 12 at Doomben Cl6 on May 23 over 1200m, slow going 1.5 len behind Arabian Rose with 58kg at $2.70. The run before that crossed from a wide gate to lead but couldn’t hold on when 2nd of 13 at Gold Coast Bm85 on May 9 over 1200m, neck behind Sunshineinmypocket carrying 57.5kg at $4. Rates highly. Draws a decent gate for a change and can play a major role. | |||
The Group 2 Ladbrokes Moreton Cup shapes as a wide-open affair, and that often brings value into play.
ZOU SENSATION (4) found the front with a furlong to go when resuming in the Listed Luskin Star Stakes at Scone last start, but fitness gave out late and he weakened to finish 2.81 lengths fifth.
The Corsten & Larkin-trained gelding has historically improved second-up winning three of seven races, including his second run back last preparation over this distance at Caulfield.
Declan Bates should be able to find a spot in the first few pairs and enjoy a nice run on speed.

| Second-up. First-up after three months tracked the speed and boxed on steadily 5th of 13 at Scone in the LR Luskinstar on May 16 over 1300m, 2.75 len behind Sun God carrying 58.5kg at $18. Previously second-up won by a long-neck at Caulfield Bm84 June 28 over 1200m in soft going defeating Keep Your Cool with 59kg at $7.50. Has a strong second-up record so keep him in mind. | |||
PINITO (2) returns to Eagle Farm for the first time since this day last year when she was nosed out in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks.
The Chris Waller-trained mare looks well placed to go one better after fighting strongly to win the Group 3 Magic Millions Fillies And Mares Mile at Doomben last start.
That was her second win over this distance this preparation after saluting second-up in the Group 3 Aspirational Quality at Randwick.
She was six weeks between runs last start so will have come on nicely and she meets many of the same horses better at the weights.
Ben Melham will give her every chance from the low draw.

| Last start came from midfield and won by a nose at Doomben G3 F&M-Swp May 23 over 1600m in soft going defeating Hyperbolic with 57.5kg at $4.20. The race before that 7th of 11 at Randwick in the G1 Queen Turf on April 11 over 1600m, 7 len behind Idle Flyer carrying 57kg at $61. Deep into the prep but continues to step up so stick with her. | |||
PANOVA (1) is looking to join another Chris Waller-trained filly Egg Tart and become just the second horse to win the Australasian Oaks/Queensland Oaks double.
The daughter of Trapeze Artist stormed home to claim the Group 1 feature by just under a length.
Just as Egg Tart did before her Queensland Oaks win, Waller has trialled Panova since her last start victory where she worked well within herself but produced a pleasing effort.
Along with her Group 1 title, she also boasts two Group 3 wins which sees her incredibly well weighted given she’s 12 rating points clear of her nearest rival.
Unlike many of the other fillies in the market, she draws to do no work.

| Comes off a 42 day let-up. Last start won by 1.0 len at Morphettville G1 A’asian Oaks April 25 over 2000m defeating Mating Call carrying 56kg at $11. The race before that 7th of 9 at Rosehill in the G1 Vinerystud on March 28 over 2000m, slow going 4 len behind Belle Cheval carrying 56kg at $12. Sure to go well again. | |||
CHIDIAC (7) was scratched from the Group 2 Moreton Cup in preference of the Listed Bob Charley AO Stakes and I think it was the right decision.
The Team Cavanough-trained mare has won seven of her 12 career starts, including all three this preparation.
Following an impressive win in the Country Championships Final, she took on black-type company last start where she proved too strong late to win the Group 3 Hawkesbury Crown.
Braith Nock knows her well and with race fitness on her side, she may prove hard to run down.
| 7. Chidiac (9) J: Braith Nock 55kg 5×111T: Brett & Georgie Cavanough | |||
| Dual acceptor. On a three run winning streak. Returns from a 35-day let-up. At the latest run won by a nose at Hawkesbury G3 Hawk Crown May 2 over 1300m defeating Surfin’ Bird with 56kg at $4.80. The start before that tracked the speed and boxed on steadily; won by 1.0 len at this track Ctry Champ April 4 over 1400m on a rain affected track defeating Graceful Ellen carrying 55.5kg at $5.50. Kept fresh and looks to have solid claims. | |||

STARZINTHEIREYES (15) looks to have another excellent opportunity to break through at Flemington on Saturday.
The imported galloper made an encouraging Australian debut when finishing a close second over 1800m at Hawkesbury before again going down narrowly in a blanket finish at Randwick last start.
The rise to 2000m appears ideal at this stage of his preparation, and with improved fitness, a significant drop in weight and a favourable draw in barrier six, he shapes as a leading contender.
| 15. Starzintheireyes (6) J: Beau Mertens 53kg 75×23T: Tom Charlton | |||
| Third-up today and won third-up previously. Resuming made some head-way from midfield; 2nd of 11 at Hawkesbury Bm78 on May 2 over 1800m, 0.6 len behind Sacrify carrying 61kg at $7.50. Second-up made some head-way from midfield; 3rd of 12 at Randwick Bm88 on May 23 over 2000m, on heavy track; neck behind Tazima with 57kg at $6. Rates highly. Finds an ideal race and should go close. | |||
AZAZEL (1) appeals as value runner second-up this weekend at huge odds in the penultimate race at Flemington.
The son of Shocking showcased his ability during the spring with a victory in the Listed Geelong Classic, and while he finished towards the rear in the Victoria Derby, his first-up effort over a mile was better than the result indicated.
He has since sharpened up with an additional trial, and the step up in distance should suit his racing pattern perfectly. At the current price, he looks worth something small each way.
| 1. Azazel (10) J: Jamie Mott 59kg 410×8T: Mark Walker | |||
| Second run back. First-up after seven months got back early 8th of 12 at Caulfield 3yo Hcp on May 9 over 1600m, on a slow track; 4.5 len behind Highvol with 57kg at $15. Previously second-up 4th of 12 at this track in the LR Super Impose on October 4 over 1800m, 1.2 len behind Options carrying 57kg at $15. Fitter but might need another one. | |||
PINITO (2) steps out this week following an impressive victory in the Magic Millions Fillies & Mares at Doomben a fortnight ago.
She has returned to action in good order this year, having also added the Aspiraton Qualuty at Group 3 level to her CV back in the autumn.
Having performed well on this program last year when only just denied in the Oaks, she’ll relish getting back onto the Eagle Farm surface this week and in peak order, something like this looks well within her means as well.
| 2. Pinito (3) J: Ben Melham 57kg 41971T: Chris Waller | |||
I am eager to side with SOLID GOLD (10) on the quick back up following a credible performance when fifth in the Queensland Derby.
The kiwi filly turned in several promising performances in her homeland earlier this year and after looming up at the turn here last week, she just didn’t look to see out the 2500m.
She’s reportedly come right back on for that run, getting back down to the 2200m looks to suit and at around the $11 mark at publish, she rates as a genuine each way contender again.
| 10. Solid Gold (4) J: Tommy Berry 56.5kg 31155T: Roger James & Robert Wellwood | |||
| At the latest run tracked the speed and boxed on steadily 5th of 18 at this track in the G1 Qld Derby on May 30 over 2400m, slow going 6 len behind Providence carrying 55kg at $4.40. The run before that 5th of 16 at Doomben in the G3 Rough Habit on May 16 over 2000m, on a slow track; 3 len behind Kilman with 55kg at $11. Worth another chance. | |||
Ryan Cook
SPIONE (9) just needs a bit of luck from the wide draw to justify favouritism.
The Hawkes-trained son of Showtime is a much improved gelding compared to the one we saw a few weeks ago at Randwick, where he was beaten three lengths as the favourite after drifting back from an even wider gate and settling well off the pace.
The tactics were questionable, leaving him with too much to do late, but with a soft track instead of the heavy conditions he encountered last start, he shapes as a strong chance to bounce back on Saturday.
| 9. Spione (9) J: Luke Currie 57.5kg 0x136T: M, W & J Hawkes | |||
| Most recently 6th of 18 at Randwick Bm94 on May 23 over 1600m, on a wet track; 3 len behind God’s Window with 52.5kg at $3.90. The start before that came home strongly from last on the turn; 3rd of 11 at Hawkesbury Bm88 on May 2 over 1400m, 0.9 len behind Asgarda with 55kg at $4. Had plenty against last time, can bounce back strongly. | |||
RESONANT (2) was below expectations second-up for the Hayes stable last month, stepping up to 1400m where he failed to finish off after missing the start.
The rise in trip didn’t suit the Spirit Of Boom colt, but there was plenty to like about his debut over 1100m at Bendigo, where he finished a close second, beaten just half a length.
Dropping back to a shorter sprint here, he looks well placed to improve with added fitness and the likelihood of a firmer track in his favour.
| 2. Resonant (5) J: Harry Coffey 56.5kg 27T: Ben, Will & Jd Hayes | |||
| Raced twice to date. At debut, made some head-way from midfield; 2nd of 10 at Bendigo Vobis Gold Rush on May 2 over 1100m, 0.5 len behind Marffiano with 58kg at $19. Second-up 7th of 11 at this track 2yo Hcp on May 16 over 1400m, 6 len behind Autumn Charm carrying 59kg at $4.40. Can improve. | |||
SURFIN’ BIRD (5) looks well placed third-up stepping out to the mile.
The daughter of The Autumn Sun heads to Queensland for the first time off a solid showing in the Dark Jewel Classic at Scone, where she settled midfield and maintained her position throughout over 1400m.
She won twice over this distance during her maiden campaign last year, and with a bit of early luck from the draw, she should be right in the mix.
| 5. Surfin’ Bird (15) J: Tim Clark 57kg 15×25T: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott | |||
| Third-up today and won third-up previously. Resuming crossed from a wide gate to settle just off the pace but gave ground when 2nd of 13 at Hawkesbury in the G3 Hawk Crown on May 2 over 1300m, nose behind Chidiac with 56kg at $5. Second-up 5th of 16 at Scone in the G3 Dark Jewel on May 16 over 1400m, 1.5 len behind Tuileries with 55kg at $2.45. A shade disappointing last time but should be peaking now. | |||
SOVERATO (6) shapes as a genuine double-figure hope in Saturday’s Queensland Oaks.
She’s well into her preparation now and rock fit, last seen finishing midfield in The Roses a fortnight ago after covering ground throughout and lacking a sharp turn of foot when the tempo lifted.
The drop back to 2000m didn’t play to her strengths, so stepping up in trip this weekend is a clear positive, especially with Ryan Maloney now having a better feel for her.
| 6. Soverato (8) J: Ryan Maloney 56.5kg 24256T: Chris Waller | |||
| At the latest run 6th of 14 at Doomben in the G2 The Roses on May 23 over 2000m, 2.5 len behind Fireball Miss carrying 56.5kg at $7. The run before that 5th of 12 at Randwick in the G1 Atc Oaks on April 11 over 2400m, 5 len behind Ohope Wins carrying 56kg at $7.50. Thereabouts last start and looks a definite winning hope. | |||
