Colombia’s Emiliana Arango and Polish veteran Magda Linette square off in the first round of the Guadalajara Open.
Fifth seed Linette still holds a top-40 spot in the WTA rankings, bookending wins over the likes of Danielle Collins in Washington and Jessica Pegula in Toronto with first-round exits at Wimbledon (to Elsa Jacquemot) and the US Open (to Mccartnery Kessler).
World No.86 Arango was routed 6-1 6-2 by Iga Swiatek first up at the US Open. The 24-year-old played in last week’s Abierto Zapopan event, reaching the quarterfinals.
She was a shock quarterfinalist here on WTA 1000 debut (the tournament is now a WTA 500-level event) but has yet to recapture that magic.
The wily Linette looks a solid option here.
Former US Open champ Sloane Stephens and Italy’s Lucrezia Stefanini square off for the first time in the Guadalajara Open’s first round.
Stephens, a former world No.3, is returning from a six and a half month foot injury layoff and has not won a tour-level match in more than a year. She went down to Olivia Gadecki here in the first round in 2024.
World No.148 Stefanini won qualifiers against Sachia Vickery and Anastasia Kulikova to make the main draw.
The 27-year-old went down to Emiliana Arango 7-6 6-0 at the Abierto Zapopan last week after failing to qualify for the US Open.
While tour-level wins have been few and far between for Stefanini, taking on an underdone Stephens shapes as a good match-up for her…but the veteran is getting a tantalising start in this one.
German stalwart and sixth seed Tatjana Maria is a $2.20 outsider heading into this clash with Turkey’s Zeynep Sonmez at the Guadalajara Open.
World No.74 Sonmez, who won her maiden title at the Merida Open last October, has made a splash on the grand slam stage in 2025.
The 23-year-old made it to the third round at Wimbledon, while she beat Katie Volynets first up at the US Open before losing a marathon match against Marta Kostyuk.
World No.51 Maria made a rankings surge after a shock capture of the Queen’s Club title in June, while she made the final of a WTA 125k event in Newport. But results since have been modest and she lost 6-3 6-2 to Maria Sakkari in the US Open’s first round.
Sonmez is a player on the rise and should have too much for the 38-year-old here.
Aussie Storm Hunter and Czech star Katerina Siniakova – both former doubles world No.1s – lock horns in the Guadalajara Open’s first round.
Hunter has the less notable singles career, reaching a career-high No.114 last year. The 31-year-old’s only singles matches in recent months were solitary qualifying losses at the French Open and US Open.
Siniakova, currently ranked 78th, broke into the top 30 last year. She was edged out by Hailey Baptiste in the first round of the US Open before going on to reach the doubles final.
The 27-year-old won a WTA 125k event in Warsaw last month, bundled Qinwen Zheng out in the first round at Wimbledon and reached the final of the Prague Open.
Despite being a prohibitive $1.13 favourite, backing Siniakova for a convincing win shapes as the value option.
