Aussie young gun Maya Joint takes on Czech veteran Katerina Siniakova in the Wuhan Open’s Round of 32.
Nineteen-year-old Joint has climbed to a career-high No.35 after beating Sofia Kenin and Clara Tauson on her way to the Korea Open semis, and accounting for another top-20 star in Diana Shnaider at the China Open.
Joint defeated Lin Zhu 7-5 7-6 in the first round in Wuhan.
Doubles No.1 Siniakova produced one of her most notable singles run in some time at the Korea Open, reaching the semis as a qualifier.
The 29-year-old won qualifiers against Caty McNally and Yafan Wang to make it to the main draw here, then upset Shnaider 6-4 6-4 in the first round.
With Siniakova playing her fourth match in five days, Joint shapes as the value option in this pick ’em.
World No.28 Sofia Kenin lines up against 16th seed Liudmila Samsonova in the Wuhan Open’s Round of 32.
Kenin is 2-0 against Samsonova, winning at the 2020 French Open and 2023 Qatar Open.
Kenin fought back to beat Anastasia Zakharova 3-6 7-6 6-3 in the first round yesterday, but she has not won more than one main draw match at a tournament since the French Open.
Samsonova has struggled for momentum since reaching a maiden slam quarterfinal at Wimbledon. She lost to Priscilla Hon in the second round of the US Open and Lois Boisson first up at the China Open.
The Russian regrouped with a 6-1 7-5 win over Emiliana Arango in the first round in Wuhan, but Kenin is an enticing underdog here courtesy of her rivalry record.
Australian seventh seed Alex de Minaur takes on Portugal’s Nuno Borges for the first time at the Shanghai Masters.
US Open quarterfinalist De Minaur’s China Open campaign ended with a three-set loss to Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals, while he’s comfortably accounting for Camilo Ugo Carabelli (6-4 6-2) and Kamil Majchrzak (6-1 7-5) so far in Shanghai.
World No.51 Borges hadn’t won more than one match at a tournament since reaching the third round at Wimbledon, but he’s put away Botic van de Zandschulp (7-6 7-6), Aleksandar Vukic (7-6 6-4) and Jungcheng Shang (7-6 4-6 6-3) over the past week.
De Minaur, the $1.13 favourite, should progress without too much trouble – but expect Borges to make him work for it.
Daniil Medvedev gets another opportunity to peg one back against bogey player Learner Tien at the Shanghai Masters.
Nineteen-year-old Tien rolled Medvedev in five sets at the Australian Open at the start of the year, while the grand slam winner retired at 5-7 7-5 4-0 down in the China Open semis just over a week ago.
Tien went on to lose the final to Jannik Sinner 6-2 6-2, but it was nevertheless a momentous campaign that also included a win over Lorenzo Musetti.
Before running into Tien, Medvedev had enjoyed his best run of form in months in Beijing with dominant straight-sets wins over Cameron Norrie, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Alexander Zverev.
Medvedev has beaten Dalibor Svrcina (6-1 6-1) and Davidovich Fokina again (6-3 7-5) so far in Shanghai. Tien came from a set down to beat Miomir Kecmanovic and Corentin Moutet, before seeing off Norrie (7-6 6-3).
Medvedev will be hellbent on redressing the balance, but $3.20 underdog Tien is playing with unbridled confidence and has to be considered a strong chance of another upset.
