Cranbourne Harness Preview – Sunday 2nd August

Cranbourne Harness Preview – Sunday 2nd August

Cranbourne stages an eight-race harness racing program on Sunday. Craig Rail delivers his race-by-race preview, tips and quaddies.

Race 1
Each Way
SELECTIONS: ALOT LIKE JEANNIE (4), CYCLONE JENNI (2), FROSTY DROP (6), BELLA LOUISE (5)

OVERVIEW: A LOT LIKE JEANNIE (4) is resuming since a big victory at Shepparton in May, where she sprinted fast down the back straight to hit the front at the 400m and sustained the run to score by over twenty metres. She won a trial in handy time at Shepparton recently so she must be respected. CYCLONE JENNI (2) settled last of the seven runners, moved up without cover at the 800m and battled on fairly well for third behind Vivid Dream at Cranbourne when resuming since May. She should strip fitter from that run and is one of the leading chances. FROSTY DROP (6) led out then took cover at the 1500m when she tried hard for second behind the handy type Bettor Punter at Melton last time out. She led throughout at a Cranbourne victory two starts ago and looms as one of the leading chances again. ALL THINGS SPICY (2) and BELLA LOUISE (5) are both worth thought in multiple combinations.

Race 2
SELECTIONS: ROMEO (5), RIVER STORM (1), SPRINGFIELD AFFAIR (7), OUR SWEET JEANNIE (4)

OVERVIEW: ROMEO (5) is a very smart colt that has been freshened since a victory at Wagga on June 05, where he recorded a sizzling mile rate of 1.52.9. He performed well at the Melton trials on Tuesday, where a narrow second and should give a bold showing. RIVER STORM (1) is resuming since winning the Homegrown Classic in December and hasn’t been to the trials but he has the class to test this field. He has defeated his main rival ROMEO (5) previously but race fitness might be the key to the result. SPRINGFIELD AFFAIR (7) has been competing mostly at Metropolitan level and will appreciate a drop back in grade for this assignment. His strong second behind Clymenus at Kilmore two starts ago is a good form pointer for this event. OUR SWEET JEANNIE (4) led throughout to win at Shepparton when resuming then followed with a third at Kilmore. It is a strong field but she is worth thought again. KATIE LORRAINE (6) has performed well at her four starts to date and warrants consideration.

Race 3
SELECTIONS: KITTY CASH (1), SAMMY HALLER (5), HILLWINSOME (6), SEBASTIANS WAITING (7)

OVERVIEW: KITTY CASH (1) put in a top performance when second behind Fritsch last week as she was severely checked on the first corner and was detached from the pack in the early stages. She was a winner at Cranbourne on June 28 and is ideally drawn to run a good race. SAMMY HALLER (5) trailed the leader and came to the outside on the home turn when third behind Keayang Gypsy at Melton last outing. He is maintaining a consistent form line and is one of the leading chances again. HILLWINSOME (6) possesses early speed and has been racing consistently at a higher level so he must be given a winning hope. SEBASTIANS WAITING (7) was heavily supported but broke stride and lost his chance when unplaced at Melton last week. He bounced back with a trial victory at the Melton on Tuesday and is a winning chance if he delivers a fool proof display. SOVEREIGN TIGER (3) has performed well at his two starts since returning from a spell and should run his usual honest race.

Race 4
SELECTIONS: MIKISPUR (8), METRO MEMORY (1), BETTORSWEETVICTORY (3), GOODTIME CAPTAIN (6) ᅠ

OVERVIEW: MIKISPUR (8) will appreciate a drop back in class on his latest seventh at Metropolitan level. He trailed the leader and used the sprint lane when he won at Cranbourne three starts ago and he follows out behind the fast beginner METRO MEMORY (1) here so he looms as a winning chance. METRO MEMORY (1) is stepping up in grade but he is suited over the sprint distance and he has the early speed to be prominent throughout. He scored after leading at Maryborough and recorded a handy mile rate of 1.56.2 on June 29. BETTORSWEETVICTORY (3) gained a nice trail throughout and battled on fairly well for second behind Maurlen Compass last outing. She is racing consistently and is worth thought again. GOODTIME CAPTAIN (6) pushed forward to find the lead and scored at Melton on May 15. He settled three back on the markers and held his own at his latest fourth and is worth a ticket each way.

Race 5
SELECTIONS: ROCKLEIGHS LEGACY (3), PRECIOUS BELLE (6), ILLAWONG PHOENIX (4), MY BEAUTIFUL LIFE (5)

OVERVIEW: ROCKLEIGHS LEGACY (3) is a juvenile taking on older horses but she is capable of running a big race. She won a heat of the Bathurst Gold Tiara earlier in the season and finished second behind the smart pacer Farroh Joe at Kilmore two starts ago. PRECIOUS BELLE (6) was restrained at the start, settled in a rearward position and trailed into the race nicely when she finished over the top of her rivals to win comfortably last outing. She is racing in peak form and should be hitting the line strongly again. ILLAWONG PHOENIX (4) was resuming since March when she finished off okay for fifth (8m) behind Inexorable at Cranbourne. She should be fitter from that run and is worth an investment. MY BEAUTIFUL LIFE (5) and BUILDTHEMANASTATUE (7) both have the ability to show up without surprising.

Race 6
Each Way
SELECTIONS: ALLTHINGS MENANCING (10), CHARLIE SEBASTIAN (3), WESTERIA (2), SMOKEN HEAVEN (1)

OVERVIEW: ALLTHINGS MENANCING (10) is a first starter for trainer Michael Ramstein, which came from last and made up many lengths at his latest trial second. He obviously has ability and is worth following. CHARLIE SEBASTIAN (3) also shaped up nicely at the trials with a second placed effort at Cranbourne and must be kept safe. WESTERIA (2) gained the perfect trip and just failed to overhaul Look At Her when a close second at Stawell last outing. She was held up for a run at a vital stage and finished off fast for a close second at Cranbourne prior so she is getting close to a win. SMOKEN HEAVEN (1) finished in third behind the smart pacer Farroh Joe after trailing the leader throughout at Kilmore last outing. He is ideally drawn and should run a good race again. DIAMOND CHIPP (9) showed some ability at his debut performance and should have improved with the experience so he is not without a chance.

Race 7
SELECTIONS: QUICK CRUNCH (10), GOODTIME MAE (7), DOT BALL (6), FINAL BOW (4)

OVERVIEW: QUICK CRUNCH (10) has been racing in great form recently and looms as one of the leading chances again. She won twice in succession at Cranbourne and Ballarat then finished off nicely at her next two attempts. GOODTIME MAE (7) progressed forward from a similar wide draw to race without cover and battled on fairly well for fourth at Shepparton last outing. She finished a close second behind Cool Story at Melton prior and is worth a ticket each way in an open race. TOMMYS LOOKOUT (5) and DOT BALL (6) both performed below expectations at Shepparton during the week but their form prior was sound so both are worth another chance. FINAL BOW (4) has had several chances recently but she is a good chance of finding the lead over the sprint distance so she is a possible improver.

Race 8
SELECTIONS: ATOMIC GLORY (3), CHASING THE WIND (8), PICKLE IT (10), ICANMOTOR (11)

OVERVIEW: It is a very open race to end the program with many winning chances. ATOMIC GLORY (3) is a fast beginner and attempted to lead throughout when second behind Tommys Lookout on July 01. This race is slightly easier than his latest unplaced efforts and he should go well if he can find the lead around the first corner. CHASING THE WIND (8) had no luck whatsoever when sixth at Cranbourne last outing. He has had a lot of chances since his latest success but his close second behind Nivekalon Eagle on June 14 is a good form pointer for this event. PICKLE IT (10) couldn’t go the hectic tempo when beaten by a long way in a mile rate of 1.55.3 at Melton last week but he was placed at his three attempts prior. He tends to perform best when he is able to lead so being drawn on the second line is a disadvantage but he strikes a suitable assignment here. ICANMOTOR (11) will appreciate a slight drop back in class for this assignment and is a possible improver. ALLHEARTNOHEIGHT (2) is resuming since December and hasn’t been to the trials but he was performing well enough last preparation to be competitive against this field.
