The 2026 Memsie Stakes was run and won on Saturday, August 29, at Caulfield, where Chris Waller’s Beiwacht was victorious.
Beiwacht signalled his return to top-level racing with a dominant front-running win in the 2026 Memsie Stakes on Saturday.
The Chris Waller-trained colt found no problem getting to the front, and with the way the Caulfield track was playing, finding an uncontested lead was always going to make the Goldolphin-owned runner tough to beat.
The 4YO was never in doubt of losing the race, as the well-backed $6.50 chance kicked away for one of the most dominant Group 1 wins in recent memory.
He held off a fast-finishing Mr Brightside, who showed that age is no barrier. He’s an elite Group 1 thoroughbred, and the Hayes stable has many options ahead of his spring carnival.
Race favourite Cosmic Crusader finished third without much luck. He’s a genuine Group 1 contender, who is set to line up in the Underwood Stakes in September.
However, the standout was Beiwacht, who graduated from age group company in fine style.

Defending champion Treasurethe Moment filled out the Top 4 for punters, suggesting she’s in for a big spring.
Other notable finishers were Buckaroo in 5th and Birdman in 6th, as they prepare for longer distance races this spring.
