For that reason, it is widely regarded as one of the most significant races for identifying future stallions.

Recent winners such as Ole Kirk, Super Seth, The Autumn Sun, All Too Hard, and Starspangledbanner have all made their mark in the breeding industry, while Anamoe’s first crop is now beginning to make an impression.

Winning the Caulfield Guineas requires a genuine top-class three-year-old, and the race has always captured the attention of punters. There is nothing quite like watching elite horses compete at the highest level, and this year’s renewal promises to be no exception.

Notable Caulfield Guineas Winners

The Caulfield Guineas has been a showcase of racing excellence since its first running in 1881. Its honour roll reads like a who’s who of Australian thoroughbred racing, with some outstanding champions making their mark long before the past two decades.

Names such as Patron, Heroic, Ajax, and Hydrogen helped establish the race’s reputation, with each proving themselves among the elite horses of their era. The tradition continued with celebrated winners including Tulloch, Vain, Surround, Manikato, Redoute’s Choice, and Lonhro.

With such an exceptional list of past champions, it is easy to understand why the Caulfield Guineas remains a key target for trainers with talented 3YOs. Success in the race can cement a horse’s place in Australian racing history.

Caulfield Guineas History

The Caulfield Guineas is firmly established as one of Australia’s premier races for 3YO. First held at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne in 1881, the Group 1 contest is run over 1600 metres and has long attracted some of the finest young thoroughbreds in the country.

The race has also proved a valuable guide to the Victoria Derby, with several horses completing the prestigious double, including Red Anchor, Mahogany, and Theo. However, Helenus remains the most recent horse to achieve the feat, doing so in 2002.

Among the leading figures in the race’s modern history, James McDonald has ridden three recent winners, while Chris Waller has trained four Caulfield Guineas champions.

With $3 million in prize money, the race ranks among the richest events of the Melbourne Spring Carnival and continues to hold a special place on the Australian racing calendar.
