Some of Australia’s best thoroughbreds have won the Might and Power Stakes, so we’re excited to see who will etch their name in Might and Power Stakes history.

It’s a star-studded Might and Power Stakes past winners list, but there have been some upset results thrown in there for good measure, which is why it’s a popular race for punters of all levels.
It has also been a good mix of local and international runners, with the likes of Gailo Chop and Benbelt proving their worth by winning in 2017 and 2018. They followed the most popular winner of all time, Winx, who scored an emphatic victory in 2016, and remains one of the best horses to ever grace the turf.
Fan favourites, and champions in their own right, Whobegotyou and Atlantic Jewel on the Might and Power Stakes, so it’s hard to find a past winner over the last 20 years that isn’t a household name.
Notable Might and Power Stakes Winners
With the Might and Power Stakes being first run in 1886, there have been some notable winners throughout its history.
Wakeful won back-to-back editions in 1901-1902, and he was one of the most influential thoroughbreds in Australian racing history. He helped pave the way for the likes of three-time winner Eurythmic, Gothic, Ajax, Rising Fast, Lord, and Kingston Town.
We haven’t even mentioned Bonecrusher, Castletown, and Rough Habit, who were New Zealand champions of the Might and Power Stakes, which makes this race such an incredible Trans-Tasman event.
Might and Power Stakes History
Originally named the Caulfield Stakes, it has undergone many name changes before settling on the Might and Power Stakes in 2021.
Might and Power won this race in 1998, and it was named in his honour. He would have an illustrious career following his win, and the horses that followed him on the winners’ list included Northerly, Lonhro, and Mummify.
Held on the same day as the Caulfield Guineas, the Might and Power Stakes is primarily a lead-up race to the Cox Plate. It has been used by nine horses who would win the Cox Plate in the same year, with the most recent being Winx in 2016.
