We have Toorak Handicap tips and predictions for the Group 1 1600m race at Caulfield on Saturday.
Toorak Handicap odds have an even betting field available, where every runner will get its chance to win.
LADY SHENANDOAH (9) goes on top as our best bet in the Toorak Handicap.
The Chris Waller-trained mare has been racing against some of the best horses in the country and looks ready to peak third-up. She resumed with a fourth in the Winx Stakes before another solid fourth in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield, beaten just 1.3 lengths by Angel Capital.
The return to 1600m is a positive, and she has already shown she can produce her best form over this course and distance. James McDonald takes the ride, which is another big tick.
Barrier 9 isn’t perfect, but with her turn of foot, McDonald should be able to settle her comfortably before allowing her to build momentum in the straight.
| 2. Lady Shenandoah (9) J: James McDonald 58kg 42×44 T: Chris Waller | |||
| Dual acceptor. Third-up today and won third-up previously. Resuming 4th of 11 in the G1 Winx Stakes at Randwick on August 22 over 1400m, on a slow track; 4.5 len behind Autumn Glow carrying 57kg at $19. Second-up sat on the speed and boxed on steadily 4th of 16 in the G1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at this track on September 19 over 1400m, 1.3 len behind Angel Capital with 56kg at $4.80. Rock solid, no issue to a mile, she’ll run well. | |||
REGAL AWARD (4) is the runner we want to include in our Toorak Handicap predictions at each-way odds.
He produced a terrific first-up performance in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, finishing third and beaten only 1.2 lengths by Angel Capital. He carried just 52.5kg that day and now rises to 55kg, but barrier 4 gives him every chance to win.
He should be able to settle in a prominent position and avoid getting too far out of his ground. The mile looks ideal, and being second-up should bring further improvement.
There are some genuine Group 1 horses here, but Regal Award has already shown he can compete at this level, so he’s worth including in picks for the even contest.
| 6. Regal Award (4) J: Lachlan Neindorf 55kg 517×3 T: Phillip & Tommy Stokes | |||
| Second run back. First-up after three months 3rd of 16 in the G1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at this track on September 19 over 1400m, 1.2 len behind Angel Capital with 52.5kg at $9.50. Previously second-up made ground from midfield; 3rd of 10 in the LR South Pacific Classic at Randwick on April 11 over 1400m, 1.3 len behind Beskar carrying 54.5kg at $1.90. Game fresh and can improve, hard to run down again. | |||
SALTY PEARL (7) is our best roughie and looks like an upset chance with only 52kg on her back.
She has been knocking on the door this preparation, finishing third first-up before running fourth in the Let’s Elope Stakes, beaten just 0.7 lengths by Pondalowie. She now gets another chance over 1600m, a distance that looks right in her wheelhouse.
Craig Williams takes the ride from barrier 7, giving her every chance to settle in a good position and get clear running when it matters.
She needs to find a little improvement to win a Group 1, but the $11 price makes her an appealing value runner, and those odds could firm on race day.
| 15. Salty Pearl (7) J: Craig Williams 52kg 35×34 T: Ciaron Maher | |||
| Third-up today and won third-up previously. First-up 3rd of 12 in the G3 Courtza (WW Cockram) Stakes at this track on August 29 over 1200m, on a slow track; 2.75 len behind Custom with 59kg at $15. Second-up 4th of 12 in the G2 Let’s Elope Stakes at Flemington on September 12 over 1400m, 0.7 len behind Pondalowie with 57.5kg at $7.50. Not far away last start. Big weight drop and can figure. | |||
