The Guy Walter Stakes, formerly the Wiggle Stakes, is a Group 2 race held at Royal Randwick on Verry Elleegant Stakes Day (formerly Chipping Norton Stakes Day) in late February or early March during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
Renamed in honour of late Sydney horse trainer Guy Walter who passed away in 2014 and prepared 36 Group 1 winners over his career, the 1400m set weights plus penalties race is open only to mares aged four-years-old and above.
It is run as a support act on a meeting headlined by the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) and offers $300,000 in total prize money including $170,000 to the Guy Walter Stakes winner.
The race was upgraded to its current Group 2 status for the 2015/16 racing season. Most mares in the event come previously came via a Sydney run in the Group 2 Breeders’ Classic (1200m) and the last to complete the double was Catkins (2014) before that event was revamped and moved to the spring taking place now as the Hot Danish Stakes.
The Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) is a likely autumn target for the best Guy Walter Stakes mares and Krone (2021) was the last to do the double.

In 2014 Catkins backed up from her Wiggle Stakes win to run third to Steps In Time in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m). Catkins and Sharnee Rose ran the quinella in the then Group 3 Wiggle Stakes that year and two runs later also finished one-two in the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1500m).
After her second win in 2013, Steps In Time went on to run a brave Coolmore Classic fourth and second placegetter Streama finished third in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1500m) two runs later. The 2011 Wiggle Stakes winner Jersey Lily also backed up to run second the Coolmore Classic to Aloha.
More recently the Guy Walter Stakes form from 2021 was franked with the winner Krone taking out the Group 1 Coolmore Classic next-up, while the third placed Icebath won that spring’s $2 million The Invitation race.
The 2022 Guy Walter form was franked with the winning mare Forbidden Love winning the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes – George Ryder Stakes double at her next two starts before a fourth in that year’s Doncaster Mile results. The runner-up Promise Of Success further franked the form with a win in that year’s The Invitation.
In 2023 the Guy Walter winning mare Hope In Your Heart went on to frank the form with Group 1 fourths in the Coolmore Classic and Doncaster Mile before finishing second in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes results that season.
The 2025 Guy Walter form held up strongly, with third placegetter Tashi heading north that winter to claim Brisbane’s Group 1 Tatt’s Tiara.
