The Hawkesbury Guineas is a Group 3 race run in late April at Hawkesbury Racecourse following the action of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

Contested over 1400m and offering $250,000 in prize money, the event is open only to three-year-old runners and has held Group 3 status since 2014.

First held in 2000, the race originally ran as a handicap over 1200m before increasing to its current 1400m distance and changing to set weights with penalties in 2006.

Twice the Hawkesbury Guineas has been held at Rosehill Gardens (2015, 2020).

It is held at the feature race meeting of the year for the Hawkesbury Race Club Clarendon and runs on the same day as the Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) and Group 3 Hawkesbury Crown (1300m).

The Hawkesbury Guineas has been won by a number of nice horses over the years, most famously Chautauqua (2014), a subsequent six-time Group 1 winner including his famous TJ Smith Stakes three-peat from 2015-17.

Hawkesbury Guineas Betting

Hawkesbury Guineas betting markets are usually led by in-form Sydney-trained three-year-olds coming off a similar grade run during the autumn.

Favourites have a poor recent record in the race and there have been plenty of upsets including the 2017 win by Shazee Lee at 50/1.

Mr Mozart ($2.05 in 2022) and Schwarz ($2.40 in 2024) are the latest favourites in Hawkesbury Guineas betting to salute.

Hawkesbury Guineas Field

The Hawkesbury Guineas race field attracts a quality line-up of three-year-olds, many of which may be eyeing a trip to Queensland for the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival

Potential targets across the winter for the best out of the Hawkesbury Guineas field include the Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1400m) at Eagle Farm in late May and even the Group 1 $3 million Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at the same track/distance in June.

Military Zone (2019), Dawn Passage (2020), and Hawaii Five Oh (2023) are the latest horses to complete the Hawkesbury Guineas – Fred Best Classic double.

Looking further ahead to the spring, the Hawkesbury Guineas graduates may have an eye on the lucrative $10 million The Golden Eagle (1500m) during their four-year-old seasons in Sydney. The 2020 Hawkesbury Guineas winner Dawn Passage would go on to run third in that year’s Golden Eagle trifecta.

Hawkesbury Guineas nominations close the Monday before the race runs on the Saturday and the final field along with barriers are released on the Wednesday.
