The consistent Peter Snowden trained Written Tycoon colt Grand Prairie ($3.90F) went one better than his lead-up The Rosebud second to win a messy edition of the Up And Coming Stakes in 2025. The event was marred by the fall of Tyreek and jockey Dylan Gibbons on the home straight.
In the end, it was Grand Prairie who burst through 100m out from the line to go head-to-head the closing stages with the Chris Waller roughie Fermoy on his outside before holding on to salute for the punters in a thriller.

The Up And Coming Stakes is a Group 3 race for three-year-olds run during August at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse as of 2022 during the early stages of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.
The 2021 Up And Coming Stakes moved from Randwick to Kembla Grange due to COVID-19, before the event changed race cards the next year to run on San Domenico Stakes.
A quality handicap race, the Up And Coming Stakes takes place over a middle sprint distance of 1300m and offers $250,000 in total prize money. Previously held on Winx Stakes Day a week later, in 2020 the event was moved to mid-August and was the sole Group race on its own feature race meeting before being added to the late August Rosehill race card in 2022.
It now takes place alongside the Group 3 $250,000 San Domenico Stakes (1100m).
As the name suggests, the Up And Coming Stakes serves as a key launch pad for good three-year-olds and has been won by many greats of the turf and stud including Exceed And Excel (2003), Fastnet Rock (2004) and Snitzel (2005) who all went on to become great sires.
Inaugurated in 1980, the race began as a six-furlong sprint (1200m) before changing to its current 1300m distance in 2011. It now serves as a strong lead-up into the Group 1 $1 million Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) held later in the spring and Manawanui (2011) was the last horse to do the double.

GRAND PRAIRIE (2) looks terrific value in this year’s Up And Coming Stakes for Peter Snowden with the progressive Written Tycoon colt riding in with some very good form this prep. He won on the Kensington track to break his maiden status fresh in July and has placed second in his two subsequent runs here at Rosehill. At his latest the emerging Golden Rose contender was only a half-length off Skyhook in the Listed Rosebud (1100m) on a Heavy (8). Having run well in that, I think he’ll get the 1300m now on slightly firmer going. While he goes up in weight, it is only a half-kilo more and he is still in it with 54kg. Tom Sherry continues associations from barrier two in a small field featuring a few who might need the run. He’s fit, firing and doesn’t look like he’s going backwards.
