The BRC Sprint is a Group 3 quality handicap event runs at Doomben Racecourse on a Saturday in May during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival on Doomben Cup Day.

The COVID-19 pandemic saw a number of big changes to the 2020 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival including the BRC Sprint running over 1200m instead of the traditional 1350m.

Currently offering a lucrative $300,000 in total prize money as of 2023, the race serves as a nice lead-up into the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm for which the BRC Sprint winner is exempt from ballot.

Tyzone (2019) won the BRC Sprint before a Stradbroke second and then improved on an unplaced BRC Sprint run the following year before winning the 2020 Stradbroke Handicap. In 2021 Tofane improved on her lead-up second in the BRC Sprint to win that winter’s Stradbroke Handicap.

The 2022 BRC Sprint runner-up Alligator Blood went on to win the Stradbroke at his next start.

War Machine (2026) was the last horse to complete the BRC Sprint / Stradbroke Handicap double.

BRC Sprint Form Guide

Looking for sprinters coming off a Black-Type win, those that ran well in Sydney’s Hall Mark Stakes last time out, runners proven at the Doomben track and Stradbroke hopes are all important when doing the BRC Sprint form.

In 2022, Soxagon franked the Queensland form travelling to Brisbane to win the BRC Sprint in a thriller on the back of a lead-up Listed ATC Trophy (1200m) win at the Gold Coast.

The BRC Sprint form has also stacked up in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap in recent years including when the 2022 BRC Sprint runner-up Alligator Blood won the Stradbroke next start.

Alligator Blood further franked the 2022 BRC Sprint form with a host of subsequent interstate Group 1 victories.

The 2023 BRC Sprint form was franked by the runner-up, Dragon Leap, who went back home to New Zealand to win a Group 2 and place second in the Group 1 Tarzino Trophy that spring.

The 2024 BRC Sprint winner Here To Shock went on to frank the form the next year when winning the Group 1 BCD Group Sprint in New Zealand.

In 2025, War Machine completed the BRC Sprint / Stradbroke double. The form out of that year’s BRC Sprint was further franked with the third placed Pier going on to run third in that spring’s Group 1 King Charles III Stakes in Sydney.
