The BRC Sprint is a Group 3 quality handicap event runs at Doomben Racecourse on a Saturday in May during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival on Doomben Cup Day.

The COVID-19 pandemic saw a number of big changes to the 2020 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival including the BRC Sprint running over 1200m instead of the traditional 1350m.

Currently offering a lucrative $300,000 in total prize money as of 2023, the race serves as a nice lead-up into the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm.

Tyzone (2019) won the BRC Sprint before a Stradbroke second and then improved on an unplaced BRC Sprint run the following year before winning the 2020 Stradbroke Handicap. In 2021 Tofane improved on her lead-up second in the BRC Sprint to win that winter’s Stradbroke Handicap.

The 2022 BRC Sprint runner-up Alligator Blood went on to win the Stradbroke at his next start.

The next edition of the BRC Sprint runs on Saturday May 25th, 2024 on Doomben Cup Day.

BRC Sprint Betting

BRC Sprint betting markets are led by in-form sprinters coming off good lead-up runs from the autumn – early winter season. The runners that finished in the money in races like the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) at Randwick often sit high up the BRC Sprint odds, as do any returning runners that performed well in previous editions of the race.

Favourites only have a fair record in the BRC Sprint so looking for horses further down the markets, especially any Group 1 performers or 1400m horses down in grade or distance.

There was a notable upset in 2021 however with the BRC Sprint winner Emerald Kingdom saluting at 30/1 and again in 2023 with Surf Dancer also jumping at BRC Sprint odds of $31.
