A race dominated by the favourites in recent years the CF Orr Stakes is traditionally contested by middle-distance hopes that come out of the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley in January.

CF Orr Stakes runners usually back-up at the same track and distance in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m).

The race has been won by a host of turf greats and notable recent CF Orr Stakes winners include Hartnell (2018), Black Heart Bart (2017), Dissident (2015), Moment Of Change (2014), All Too Hard (2013), and mighty mare Black Caviar (2012).

The last horse to complete the Australia Stakes – CF Orr Stakes double was Streets Of Avalon (2021) – the first since Black Caviar (2012) – while the popular CF Orr Stakes – Futurity Stakes double was last achieved by the likes of All Too Hard (2013), Moment Of Change (2014), Black Heart Bart (2017), and Mr Brightside (2024).

Backing the CF Orr Stakes winner to run top three in the Futurity Stakes is a great autumn racing tip.

In 2023 the CF Orr Stakes ran in Melbourne on the same day Sydney hosts the $2 million Restricted Listed Inglis Millennium (1100m) and was won on protest by the spring’s Golden Rose winning colt Jacquinot.

For the first time in 2024 the C.F. Orr Stakes winner also gained a guaranteed start in the $4 million The All-Star Mile race.

Mr Brightside won the 2024 CF Orr Stakes as the odds-on favourite having already been named as one of the All-Star Mile wild cards for his title defence in the event where he eventually ran second to Pride Of Jenni.

CF Orr Stakes Betting

C.F. Orr Stakes betting markets are traditionally dominated by fit horses coming out of the Australia Stakes three weeks before.

Favourites topping the CF Orr Stakes odds have a gun recent record in the classic with the six winners from 2010 – 2015 all jumping as the favourite, before a 2016 upset by Suavito and then a return to form for the favourites with Black Heart Bart (2017) saluting for the punters.

In the 2018 CF Orr Stakes betting markets, Tosen Stardom was the favourite but only managed to run 11th to Hartnell ($6) who was second favourite. The 2019 CF Orr Stakes saw one of the biggest upsets in recent times with Manuel saluting at $21 over the $2.50 favourite Kementari (2nd). There was another upset in 2020 with Alabama Express ($11) beating home the older horses as a three-year-old at double-figures.

CF Orr Stakes betting is also usually dominated by gallopers that ran top three in their lead-up run with the latest winners to come off a finish worse than third being perfect Promise (Epsom Handicap 6th) back in 2006, Hartnell (2018) who improved on a 20th in the previous spring’s Melbourne Cup results and Manuel (2019) who came off a seventh in the Group 2 Australia Stakes.

In 2023 Jacquinot was elevated to the CF Orr Stakes winner on protest and came off a first-up win in the Group 3 Manfred Stakes.

Mr Brightside ($1.95 in 2024) was the last CF Orr Stakes favourite to salute for the punters.

CF Orr Stakes Tips

C.F. Orr Stakes tips are based on the recent race history and statistics that reveal the hot streak of favourites in the race.

Along with backing the favourite another CF Orr Stakes betting tip is to look at horses that finished in the money in their lead-up.

Mares also have a top record making them a favourite in CF Orr Stakes tipping with the most recent to win being Suavito (2016) followed by Tofane (2022).

Horses drawn in double digit barriers have a poor recent record in the race, so another good tip for picking the CF Orr Stakes winner is to look for the WFA horses with a good gate.

2025 CF Orr Stakes Tips

Our Ladbrokes’ exclusive CF Orr Stakes 2025 tips will be found below the week of the race so stay tuned for what gallopers to back and sack this Melbourne Festival of Racing.

  • To Win: #1 Mr Brightside ($2.50 at time of publish) – BET NOW

Really keen to see the return of WFA hero Mr Brightside who heads a stellar CF Orr Stakes field to kick off Group 1 racing in Melbourne for the autumn. Team Hayes’ seven-year-old son of Bullbars has career earnings sitting just shy of $17 million and was in typically ace form last campaign including his Group 1 Champions Mile win at Flemington last time out. Solid first-up performer (8:3-2-1) and his record at the Caulfield track is imposing (9:5-3-0). At this course and distance he is a star (6:5-1-0) including completing the CF Orr – Futurity Stakes double here last autumn. Typhoon Tracy (2010-11) was the last back-to-back Orr winner and Mr B can certainly be the next.
