Held on Day 2 of the popular Scone Cup Carnival in mid-May, the Dark Jewel Classic runs on the Saturday and follows the Listed Scone Cup (1600m) held on the Friday.

First contested in 1996, the event is run over 1400m and is open only to female gallopers.

A quality handicap race, the Dark Jewel Classic currently offers $250,000 in prize money.

The event is named after Dark Jewel who was one of the country’s most remarkable broodmares. She had eleven foals including an incredible five individual Group 1 winners in: Baguette, Betelgeuse, Birthright, Cabochon and Heirloom.

The Dark Jewel Classic gained Group 3 status in 2014 and has been won by a number of nice mares including Daysee Doom (2017) and Con Te Partiro (2019).

The Group 3 Hawkesbury Crown (1300m) makes a nice lead-up for gallopers heading towards the Dark Jewel Classic field. Irithea (4th in 2020) and More Prophets (11th in 2023) are the last Dark Jewel Classic winners to come via a run in the Hawkesbury Crown.

Following a run in the Dark Jewel Classic field many runners may head to Brisbane for the winter riches of the carnival there including the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) in June.

Dark Jewel Classic Tips

Dark Jewel Classic tips include looking for proven Group-class mares with winning form over the 1400m or further and those with a good lead-up run from the autumn.

2024 Dark Jewel Classic Tips

Our Ladbrokes’ insider Dark Jewel Classic 2024 betting tips and race selections will be detailed below the week of the race so stay tuned for the gallopers to back and sack in the winter showdown.

  • To Win: #5 Shadows Of Love ($3.60 at time of publish) – BET NOW

Happy to stick with the favourite Shadows Of Love who looks up to a race like this building nicely this prep. Kim Waugh’s Dissident four-year-old is yet to win over this distance, but the 1400m doesn’t look beyond her reach based on her recent form. Back-to-back thirds at her two most recent, the latest of which had her only a half-length beaten in Hawkesbury’s Group 3 Crown race with 56kg. Drops to 54.5kg here and Tommy Berry in the saddle is another plus for the punters’ pick.

Dark Jewel Classic Form Guide

The Dark Jewel Classic form guide details must know facts for punters including the trainers, jockeys, barriers and lead-up form of all the runners in the race.

The Dark Jewel Classic form has gone on to hold-up in tougher events many times in recent years including when the 2019 winner Con Te Partiro went on to win the Group 1 Coolmore Classic – Queen Of The Turf Stakes double in the autumn of 2020.

In 2021 the Dark Jewel Classic winner Rocha Clock continued on to finish runner-up in both the $2 million The Invitation (1400m) and Group 2 $500,000 Hot Danish Stakes (1400m) that spring.
