Scone Cup Tips

Scone Cup tips include looking for proven Group-class milers with winning form over the 1600m or further and those with a good lead-up run from the autumn.

The lower-weighted runners make a good tip in the Scone Cup with Speediness (57.5kg in 2013), Dr Drill (56.5kg in 2020), Sky Lab (57kg in 2024), Tavi Time (56.5kg in 2025) and Hellsing (54.5kg in 2026) the only Scone Cup winners to carry more than 54kg to victory in recent history.

Any in-form horses from the Snowden stable are also a nice Scone Cup betting tip as Peter Snowden has prepared three winners since 2010 most recently Pajaro (2016).

The boys hold the advantage and usually dominate Scone Cup tipping with Sedanzer (2018) the last mare to win

The Scone Cup is a popular feature race run at Scone Racecourse in New South Wales’ Hunter Region each May.

The Listed event offers $200,000, contested over 1600m and is a quality handicap race.

Scone Cup Day runs on a Friday in mid-May and is followed on the Saturday by the Group 3 Dark Jewel Classic (1400m) for the fillies and mares.

Inaugurated in 1947, the Scone Cup always attracts a quality line-up of gallopers and plenty of punters to the track.

The Scone Cup is now also an officially qualifying race for Randwick’s $3 million The Big Dance (1600m), held from 2022 in Sydney on the same day as the Melbourne Cup.

In 2022 Rustic Steel made history completing the Scone Cup – The Big Dance double.

Scone Cup Betting

Early Scone Cup betting odds are out at bookmakers after nominations are taken the Monday prior to the race and firm after the final field is announced the Wednesday of race week.

Proven stayers from Sydney-based stables sit high-up the Scone Cup betting markets, as do any past Group winners down in grade for the event.

There was an upset in 2023 with Commando Hunt winning at Scone Cup odds of $19 for local trainer Cameron Crockett and again in 2024 with Sky Lab winning fresh at $31.

Sedanzer ($4.60 in 2018) is the last favourite in Scone Cup betting to salute for the punters.

Scone Cup Field

The Scone Cup race field attracts a class line-up of in-form milers out of a range of lead-up races in both Sydney and Melbourne over the autumn.

Runners in the Scone Cup field may come via a lead-up run in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) held a fortnight earlier.

Tavi Time (5th in 2025) was the last Hawkesbury Cup graduate to continue on and win the Scone Cup.

Gosford’s $500,000 The Coast (1600m) held just six days earlier for three and four-year-old horses is another potential lead-up with Rustic Steel (2022) doing the double on the quick back-up.

Some of the better horses out of the Scone Cup field may continue onto the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival targeting the Group races in Queensland including even the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m).

Scone Cup nominations close the Monday of race week with the final field and barrier draw released on the Wednesday.

2026 Scone Cup Field

The official Scone Cup 2026 Field & Barriers will be released by Racing NSW the Wednesday before the race and published in full below so stay tuned to see what milers make the starting line-up.

The 2026 Scone Cup final field features a capacity line-up of milers including Nathan Doyle’s last start Group 3 Hawkesbury Cup champ Churchill’s Choice and the Archibald’s consistent four-year-old Cristal Clear.

Scone Cup Form Guide

The Scone Cup form guide details must know facts for punters including the trainers, jockeys, barriers and lead-up form of all the runners in the race.

The Scone Cup form has gone on to hold-up in tougher events many times in recent years including in 2019 when the runner-up Fierce Impact went on to enjoy three subsequent Group 1 victories over his career taking out that spring’s Toorak Handicap – Cantala Stakes and the 2020 Makybe Diva Stakes.

In 2022 the Scone Cup winner Rustic Steel went on to win the inaugural The Big Dance at Randwick on the first Tuesday of November, while the third placegetter Atishu further franked the form returning in the autumn of 2023 to win the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m).
