Edward Manifold Stakes 2023

Ladbrokes Tip: Fillies might back-up from the Edward Manifold into the Thousand Guineas later in the spring.

The Edward Manifold Stakes is a Group 2 race for three-year-old fillies contested at Flemington Racecourse on Turnbull Stakes Day in early October. One of the earlier Group 1 race meetings of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, the card is headlined by the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) for Caulfield Cup types.

The Edward Manifold is one of the key support races at the meeting and is one of three Group 2 events along with the Gilgai Stakes (1200m) and Blazer Stakes (1400m).

Offering $300,000 in total prize money the mile clash is run at set weights and fillies often back-up in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield Racecourse. The last filly to complete the Edward Manifold / Thousand Guineas double was Amphitrite (2018).

The event also serves as a key lead-up into the Group 1 VRC Oaks (2500m) held the Thursday after the Melbourne Cup in early November. In 2019 the Edward Manifold third placed Miami Bound went on to win the VRC Oaks later that spring.

The latest edition of the Edward Manifold Stakes ran on Saturday October 7, 2023 at Flemington as part of Turnbull Stakes Day and was won by the Godolphin-raced filly Zardozi ($10) who came with a good late run.

Edward Manifold Stakes Betting

The Edward Manifold Stakes odds are led by in-form fillies, often from local Melbourne stables with previous experience the Melbourne way of racing and form up to at least 1400m.

A past win over the mile (1600m) and Group race experience in earlier campaigns also sees fillies sit higher up the Edward Manifold Stakes betting markets each spring.

A number of upsets have occurred in recent years including Se Sauver ($16 in 2013), Bring Me Roses ($17 in 2017), the massive boilover by Moonlight Maid ($41 in 2019), and Zardozi ($10 in 2023) so looking further down the Edward Manifold Stakes betting markets can prove profitable.

Amphitrite ($3.20 in 2018), Thermosphere ($3.60 in 2020), Elusive Express ($3.80 in 2021) and she’s Licketysplit ($3.10 in 2022) are the latest favourites in Edward Manifold Stakes betting to salute.

Edward Manifold Stakes Field

The Edward Manifold Stakes race field attracts a line-up of the season’s most promising fillies displaying staying potential.

Many of the youngsters in the race are early into their Spring Carnival campaigns and come off a non-Black Type lead-up, while others previously may have had a run in the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) in late September. Elusive Express (3rd in 2021) and She’s Licketysplit (3rd in 2022) are the last Edward Manifold Stakes winners to come off a Thousand Guineas Prelude run.

In 2023 the Thousand Guineas Prelude moved to late October after the Edward Manifold Stakes.

Fillies often use the race as a lead-up to the Thousand Guineas and in 2015 the Edward Manifold Stakes winner Badawiya ran third in the Group 1 next start, while the 2011 winner Mosheen ran second to Atlantic Jewel in that year’s Thousand Guineas before going on to win the VRC Oaks. In 2018 Amphitrite completed the Edward Manifold Stakes / Thousand Guineas double.

In 2021 Yearning improved on her Edward Manifold Stakes second to win the Thousand Guineas next-up, while that year’s Edward Manifold winner Elusive Express finished runner-up in the Group 1 event reversing the quinella.

In 2023 the Thousand Guineas moved from the weekend after the Edward Manifold Stakes to late November.

Runners may also be progressing towards a November run in Flemington’s Group 1 VRC Oaks (2500m) during the Melbourne Cup Carnival. In 2013 the Edward Manifold Stakes third place-getter Solicit ran second in the Ethereal Stakes, third in the Wakeful Stakes and third in that season’s VRC Oaks.

In 2017 Bring Me Roses won the Edward Manifold and later ran second in the VRC Oaks quinella.

The 2019 VRC Oaks results featured two of the fillies from the Edward Manifold Stakes trifecta. Oaks winner Miami Bound improved on her third, while the upset Edward Manifold winner ran a brave third in the Group 1.

The Edward Manifold Stakes nominations close the Monday before the race runs on the Sunday with the final field and barrier draw out on the Wednesday of that week.

  • To Win: #1 De Sonic Boom ($7 at time of publish) – BET NOW

Tough edition of the Edward Manifold for punters, but going for the filly donning the No. 1 with this well-tried Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained daughter Spirit Of Boom looking to break through with a Group 2 win here. She was a Blue Diamond Preview winner on debut, but got found out in the Group 1 two runs later finishing 15th. One run in the winter to keep her ticking over before a return that has her performing better again this prep. Two solid performances behind Charm Stone before a last start Listed second over 1400m at Caulfield carrying 58.5kg. Up to a mile now fourth-up and fit with less weight. Think she’ll relish the 1600m and surprise a few with a good run here.
