A key feature of the Brisbane Summer Racing Carnival the 1200m showdown is a quality handicap race offering $200,000 in total prize money.

The George Moore in Queensland runs on the same date as Ascot’s Group 1 $1.5 million Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) in Perth.

The race is currently named in honour of former champion international jockey and trainer, five-time Doomben 10,000 winner George Moore (1923–2008) who began his career on the Brisbane racing scene.

First held in 1979 the George Moore Stakes gained Group 3 status in 2001.

It has been won by plenty of nice sprinters over the years including international star Takeover Target (2005) who set the new Doomben track record winning the event in a sharp 1 minute 7.88 seconds.

The latest edition of the George Moore Stakes ran on Saturday December 2nd, 2023 at Doomben Racecourse and was won by Tony Gollan’s evergreen eight-year-old Zoustyle ($3.80) in a tight finish.

  • To Win: #6 The Big Goodbye ($8.50 at time of publish) – BET NOW

Going for a bit of early summer value and have the other Heathcote runner on top at a nice price. The Big Goodbye is an in-form six-year-old racing second-up fitter for his resuming run over 1000m at the Sunshine Coast when fifth with more weight. Drops to 54.5kg here and is drawn a treat in gate three. Will appreciate the 1200m and has a lovely strike rate at the track and trip (6:3-1-1). Listed Ramornie Handicap winner at Grafton in the winter and can return to winning form here.
