AD Hollindale Stakes 2022

Saturday May 7, 2022

Ladbrokes Tip: The A.D. Hollindale Stakes form often stacks up in the Doomben Cup during the winter in Brisbane

The A.D. Hollindale Stakes is a Group 2 race held at the Gold Coast Racecourse during the early stages of the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival on a Saturday at the start of May. The feature event at the meeting, the A.D. Hollindale Stakes is run over 1400m under weight-for-age conditions and now offers a generous $500,000 in prize money as of 2021.

Also run on A.D. Hollindale Stakes Day are the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) for three-year-olds and the Group 3 Ken Russell Memorial (1200m) for two-year-olds. A lead-up to tougher races at Doomben and Eagle Farm during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, the A.D. Hollindale Stakes is traditionally contested by gallopers heading into the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) a fortnight later.

The last horses to complete the A.D. Hollindale Stakes – Doomben Cup double were the mare Streama (2014) and star import Zaaki (2021).

Zaaki returned in 2022 to became the first dual Hollindale Stakes winner since Leebaz (2015-16).

There was no 2020 AD Hollindale Stakes with the event cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The latest edition of the AD Hollindale Stakes ran on Saturday May 7, 2022 and saw last year’s champion Zaaki ($1.45F) return for a successful title defence as the odds-on favourite.

Hollindale Stakes Betting

AD Hollindale Stakes betting markets are usually dominated by interstate-trained raiders coming off good lead-up runs in tougher and or similar class races in Sydney earlier in the autumn.

Gallopers with proven form at the distance and further sit high up the Hollindale Stakes odds and the markets often favour runners dropping back in class out of a lead-up like the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) in Sydney over more distance during April’s ‘The Championships’ or the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) also held at Royal Randwick. The Doncaster Mile – AD Hollindale Stakes double was recently achieved by It’s Somewhat (2017).

Favourites in AD Hollindale Stakes betting only have a fair recent record in the event however, but the winner will be at a firming price in markets for the upcoming Doomben Cup in Brisbane two weeks on.

Zaaki ($3.60 in 2021 and $1.45 in 2022) was the last AD Hollindale Stakes betting favourite to get the job done on back-to-back years.

AD Hollindale Stakes Form Guide

The A.D. Hollindale Stakes form guide details essential information for punters like the jockeys, trainers, barriers and lead-up runs of all the horses in the field. Checking the form for runners that come off a Group 1 Sydney lead-up, those with winning form over the distance and further and for the quality mares – who have a nice recent strike rate in the race – can all lead to a winning punt.

The Hollindale Stakes form has stacked up in the Doomben Cup in Brisbane many times in recent years including winners of the double: Zaaki (2021), Streama (2014), Metal Bender (2010), Bush Padre (2003), Above Deck (2006) and Mr Bureaucrat (2002).

Zaaki further franked the form out of the 2021 Hollindale Stakes results winning the Group 1 Underwood Stakes and Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes that spring in Melbourne as well as the 2022 edition of the $5 million The All-Star Mile the following autumn.

AD Hollindale Stakes Tips

AD Hollindale Stakes tips include looking for horses proven at around 2000m and those with good lead-up form in Sydney. Previous experience at the Gold Coast track isn’t crucial, so instead of tipping a local runner look at interstate raiders heading towards the Brisbane Winter Carnival features.

2022 AD Hollindale Stakes Tips

Our Ladbrokes’ insider AD Hollindale Stakes 2022 betting tips and Group 2 racing selections will be detailed below leading up to the race so bookmark this page for the horses to back and sack heading into the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

  • To Win: #1 Zaaki ($1.75 at time of publish)

There are a few class runners in this year’s Hollindale, but none that look a threat to the defending champion Zaaki. This star import went on to win the Group 1 Doomben Cup by seven lengths next start as well as The Q22 so he is well credentialed in Queensland. His spring saw him post two more elite level wins and, after missing the Cox Plate, he won this year’s $5 million The All-Star Mile. Second in the Queen Elizabeth last time out, barrier four, J. Mac aboard….take him at the short odds.

Hollindale Stakes results in recent years have been dominated by Sydney raiders as well as the season’s in-form mares like Streama (2014) and Lights Of Heaven (2013), along with the filly Oregon’s Day (2018). Leebaz became a dual A.D. Hollindale Stakes winner in 2016 when successfully defending his title at a roughie’s price.

Other notable A.D. Hollindale Stakes winners from the past decade include Zaaki (2021 & 2022), It’s Somewhat (2017), My Kingdom Of Fife (2011), Metal Bender (2010) and Scenic Shot (2008).
