The feature event at the meeting, the A.D. Hollindale Stakes is run over 1400m under weight-for-age conditions and now offers a generous $500,000 in prize money as of 2021.
Also run on A.D. Hollindale Stakes Day are the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) for three-year-olds and the Group 3 Ken Russell Memorial (1200m) for two-year-olds.
A lead-up to tougher races at Doomben and Eagle Farm during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, the A.D. Hollindale Stakes is traditionally contested by gallopers heading into the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) a fortnight later.
The last horses to complete the A.D. Hollindale Stakes – Doomben Cup double were the mare Streama (2014) and star import Zaaki (2021).
Zaaki returned in 2022 to became the first dual Hollindale Stakes winner since Leebaz (2015-16) before his historic third consecutive victory in 2023 when the event was held at the Sunshine Coast.
Zaaki’s trainer Annabel Neasham was back in 2024 winning the Hollindale for the fourth year running with stablemate Numerian ($31).
There was no 2020 AD Hollindale Stakes with the event cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The latest edition of the AD Hollindale Stakes ran on Saturday May 11, 2024 at the Sunshine Coast Racecourse and saw Annabel Neasham continue her excellent record in the event with eight-year-old Numerian ($31), second in last year’s Doomben Cup, posting a big upset first-up ahead of the Brisbane majors.

AD Hollindale Stakes Betting
AD Hollindale Stakes betting markets are usually dominated by interstate-trained raiders coming off good lead-up runs in tougher and or similar class races in Sydney earlier in the autumn.
Gallopers with proven form at the distance and further sit high up the Hollindale Stakes odds and the markets often favour runners dropping back in class out of a lead-up like the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) in Sydney over more distance during April’s ‘The Championships’ or the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) also held at Royal Randwick. The Doncaster Mile – AD Hollindale Stakes double was recently achieved by It’s Somewhat (2017).
Favourites in AD Hollindale Stakes betting only have a fair recent record in the event however, but the winner will be at a firming price in markets for the upcoming Doomben Cup in Brisbane two weeks on.
Zaaki ($3.60 in 2021, $1.45 in 2022 and $1.60 in 2023) was the last AD Hollindale Stakes betting favourite to get the job done three years on the trot.
There was a notable upset in 2024 with Numerian winning first-up at AD Hollindale Stakes odds of $31 in the wet at the Sunshine Coast.

AD Hollindale Stakes Field
The A.D. Hollindale Stakes race field attracts a collection of the season’s best staying types, many coming off lead-up runs in Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival events like the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) the month before.
Another possible Sydney lead-up into the AD Hollindale Stakes field is the Group 3 JRA Plate (2000m) at Randwick in late April, which Leebaz ran second in back in 2015 before his Group 2 Gold Coast win. Leebaz also won the 2016 Hollindale Stakes, the first back-to-back winner of the race since Shogun Lodge (2000-01).
Following a run in the AD Hollindale field gallopers may contest the Doomben Cup and or the Group 2 $1.2 million The Q22 (2200m) – a treble completed by Zaaki in 2021.
AD Hollindale Stakes nominations close the Monday before the race with the final field and barriers out two days later on the Wednesday.

AD Hollindale Stakes Form Guide
The A.D. Hollindale Stakes form guide details essential information for punters like the jockeys, trainers, barriers and lead-up runs of all the horses in the field.
Checking the form for runners that come off a Group 1 Sydney lead-up, those with winning form over the distance and further and for the quality mares – who have a nice recent strike rate in the race – can all lead to a winning punt.
The Hollindale Stakes form has stacked up in the Doomben Cup in Brisbane many times in recent years including winners of the double Zaaki (2021), Streama (2014), Metal Bender (2010), Bush Padre (2003), Above Deck (2006), and Mr Bureaucrat (2002).
Zaaki further franked the form out of the 2021 Hollindale Stakes results winning the Group 1 Underwood Stakes and Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes that spring in Melbourne as well as the 2022 edition of the $5 million The All-Star Mile the following autumn.
Zaaki finished third in the 2022 Doomben Cup results off his second Hollindale success and finished top three in a host of subsequent Group 1s in Melbourne and Sydney including going back-to-back in Flemington’s Mackinnon Stakes (VRC Champion Stakes) during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Huetor improved on a second in the Hollindale in 2023 (held at the Sunshine Coast) to win the Doomben Cup next run.

AD Hollindale Stakes Tips

Previous experience at the track isn’t crucial, so instead of tipping a local runner look at interstate raiders heading towards the Brisbane Winter Carnival features.

- Each Way: #9 Naval College ($15 at time of publish) – BET NOW
Open Hollindale at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday, and at the price happy to take Naval College each way for Annabel Neasham. Neasham’s runners are going great guns and she saddles-up a few in this including this ultra-consistent Dartmouth gelding. The five-year-old won three on the trot last time in including the Listed January Cup (2000m) at Rosehill by over three lengths. Took out the Australia Day Cup over 2400m at Warwick Farm next up before a freshen-up. Resumes, but has been kept fit with some solid trials. The drop to 1800m now is the question, but think after the little let-up it will suit and they can surprise a few. Rails draw and handles Soft going. Genuine chance.
