Karrakatta Plate Tips

Karrakatta Plate tips include looking for previous winners at the Ascot track at least over 1100m and two-year-olds coming off a top three run in the Gimcrack Stakes from a fortnight earlier.

Fillies have a credible record over the boys in the race and also make a good Karrakatta Plate betting tip if the form is right. Amelia’s Jewel (2022), Super Smink (2023), and Talkanco (2025) are the last Karrakatta Plate winning fillies.

Contested over 1200m the juveniles’ sprint feature offers a juicy $500,000 in prize money and is now the sole Group status race on the card having previous been run on the same day as the Group 3 WA Oaks.

The premier race for two-year-olds during the Perth Autumn Carnival, the state’s best youngsters head into the race looking for a share in the lucrative prize pool.

Many of the best out of the Karrakatta Plate back-up at Ascot Racecourse over more distance in the Group 3 W.A. Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) and the latest to complete the double were Whispering Brook (2016), Super Smink (2023), and Bustling (2024).

From 2023 the Karrakatta Plate will run a week later than previously to accompany the now $5 million slot race – The Quokka.

The 2022 Karrakatta Plate winning filly Amelia’s Jewel was the first horse to secure a slot in the inaugural The Quokka field in 2023 where she ran a brave second to Overpass.

Karrakatta Plate Betting

Karrakatta Plate betting odds favour two-year-olds with proven Perth form and non-maidens with a previous win at Ascot Racecourse already on the record.

Each autumn the Karrakatta Plate betting markets are dominated by the youngsters coming out of earlier WA lead-up races like the Listed Supremacy Stakes (1100m) and Group 3 Gimcrack Stakes (1100m) in March.

The Gimcrack Stakes has been a great betting guide to the Karrakatta Plate in recent years with similar horses finishing in the money in both races. Amelia’s Jewel (2022) and Talkanco (2025) are the latest juveniles to complete the Gimcrack Stakes – Karrakatta Plate double.

In 2023 the Gimcrack Stakes winner Live To Tell jump odds-on favourite in the Karrakatta Plate but went on to run second behind the Gimcrack runner-up Super Smink who turned the tables.

The Karrakatta Plate – WA Sires Produce Stakes betting double is also a popular one with punters each season.

Amelia’s Jewel ($1.80 in 2022) and Bustling ($1.75 in 2024) are the latest Karrakatta Plate favourites to salute for the punters.

There was a huge upset in 2026 with Afireofgidgeecoals improving on a lead-up third in the Perth Stakes to salute at $31!

Karrakatta Plate Field

The Karrakatta Plate race field attracts the top two-year-olds getting about in Perth during the autumn. Usually attracting a near-capacity field, the majority of the youngsters head into the half-a-million-dollar feature via an earlier Ascot run in the Group 3 Gimcrack Stakes (1100m) the previous month.

Whispering Brook (2016), Amelia’s Jewel (2022), and Talkanco (2025) are the latest runners to take out the Gimcrack Stakes – Karrakatta Plate double.

The best performing juveniles in the Karrakatta Plate field return to the Ascot track two weeks later for the WA Sires’ Produce Stakes, Whispering Brook also winning the subsequent Group 3 in 2016.

Other recent Karrakatta Plate – WA Sires’ Produce Stakes double winners include Super Smink (2023), Luke’s Luck (2012), Motion Pictures (2010), Brava Fortune (2008) and Roman Time (2007).

In 2021 the Karrakatta Plate winner Ex Sport Man ran second next-up in the WA Sires’, while Liwa ran second and third respectively in the same two events.

The 2025 Karrakatta Plate form stacked up well, with runner‑up Just Too Fly bouncing back at his next start to win the WA Sires’.

Karrakatta Plate nominations close in late February with the final field released on the Monday.

2026 Karrakatta Plate Field

2026 Karrakatta Plate Nominations

The early Karrakatta Plate 2026 nominations close on Monday the 9th of March 2026 and will be detailed below once available.

The 2026 Karrakatta Plate nominations attracted 73 hopeful two-year-olds including Sean & Jake Casey’s Magic Millions WA 2YO Classic winning filly Maria Lucia and her fellow two-time winning stablemate Beatty who won Ascot’s Crystal Slipper by a big margin in the spring.

Karrakatta Plate Form Guide

The Karrakatta Plate form guide features all the must know facts including saddlecloth numbers, barriers, jockeys, trainers and the lead-up form of the horses in the field. Looking at the form for the race, two-year-olds that ran well in the earlier Gimcrack Stakes over 100m less distance at the same track two weeks prior is key.

Wide Karrakatta Plate barriers have produced a number of recent winners including Amelia’s Jewel (15 of 16 in 2022), so it is more a case of looking for class and consistency over gate draws when doing the form on the Group 2 feature.

The 2022 Karrakatta Plate form was franked that spring with the winner Amelia’s Jewel returning to take out both the Group 2 WA Guineas (1600m) and the Group 1 Northerly Stakes (1800m).

In 2023 the Karrakatta Plate third placegetter Ripcord went on to finish in the money in a host of tougher races that year including his Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes second and Group 3 $1.5 million The Gold Rush third in the summer.
