Oh Too Good ($2.70F) delivered a fairytale win in the 2025 Catanach’s Jewellers Vase results, giving trainer Kevin Daffy his first Stakes success with his only horse in work. The six-year-old mare, affectionately known as Gigi, proved far too strong in the Group 3 feature over 1600m at Caulfield on Guineas Day. She enjoyed a perfect run in transit under Damian Lane, who made no mistake after a luckless ride in the previous race. From the box seat, Lane peeled her out at the top of the straight and she gradually wore down second-favourite Jennilala before pulling clear to win by 1.3 lengths.

With MOLLY BLOOM coming out, I’m switching gears and leaning toward GALA QUEEN (1) as a value Each Way play. She’s drawn to get every chance from the inside alley and while her Caulfield record isn’t flash (0 from 3), she’s a genuine miler and this looks her kind of race. Phillip Stokes’ Deep Field mare is two-from-three at the 1600m, including a gutsy win last start at HQ where she lugged 60.5kg and still got the job done in a tight finish. She drops to 57kg here, which levels things out nicely, and Luke Nolen jumps aboard—a solid booking. She’s up in grade but has form around handy types, including a fourth here two back behind On Display when drawn the carpark. Back to her pet trip, on a Good-rated surface, and drawn to land midfield with cover—she’s got the turn of foot to be charging late. At the price, I’m happy to have her in the mix.

The Ladies’ Day Vase – currently run as the Catanach’s Jewellers Vase – is a 1600m mile race for older mares held at Caulfield Racecourse on a Saturday in mid-October as part of Caulfield Guineas Day.
It was previously run at a mid-week meeting for Thousand Guineas Day before a change-up to the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival dates and major race days ahead of the 2023 edition.
The race now takes place alongside three Group 1 events with the Caulfield Guineas, Might And Power, and Toorak Handicap the features on the bumper 10-race card.
The Ladies’ Day Vase offers $240,000 and is run at set weights plus penalties.
It serves as a potential lead-up to Flemington’s Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day.
