Ladbrokes Tip: The Ladies’ Day Vase serves as a potential lead-up into the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes
The Ladies’ Day Vase – currently run as the Catanach’s 150 Years Vase – is a 1600m mile race for older mares held at Caulfield Racecourse on a Saturday in mid-October as part of Caulfield Guineas Day.
It was previously run at a mid-week meeting for Thousand Guineas Day before a change-up to the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival dates and major race days ahead of the 2023 edition.
The race now takes place alongside three Group 1 events with the Caulfield Guineas, Might And Power, and Toorak Handicap the features on the bumper 10-race card.
The Ladies’ Day Vase offers $200,000 and is run at set weights plus penalties.
It serves as a potential lead-up to Flemington’s Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day.
Run and won since 1994 and gained its current Group 3 status in 2013.
This season the 2024 Ladies’ Day Vase ran on Saturday October 12, 2024 as part of the Caulfield Guineas Day card in Melbourne and was narrowly won by Danny O’Brien’s recent Let’s Elope Stakes winning four-eyar-old Grinzinger Belle ($5.50).

- To Win: #7 Lady Jones ($5.50 at time of publish) – BET NOW
Typically open edition of the Guineas Day Vase race for mares but have landed on the Stephen Brown-trained Lady Jones who is drawn a treat in gate 4 for Ethan Brown. This consistent five-year-old is a three-time placegetter from four previous Caulfield assignments and is proven over the mile distance. Gold Bracelet winner at Bendigo back in April before a Group 2 placing in Adelaide and looks to be building to a race like this now in the spring. Comes via the right form races with decent performances in the Let’s Elope when fifth in the wet at Flemington and Stocks Stakes second at The Valley last time out. Needs to turn the tables on the likes of Grinzinger Belle but can do that at Caulfield now fit and ready to fire.
