Ladbrokes Tip: The Lexus Stakes is the final chance for stayers to make the 24-horse Melbourne Cup field
The $300,000 Lexus Stakes – currently known as the Lexus Hotham Handicap – is run over 2500m at Flemington on the first day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival in late October or early November on Victoria Derby Day. A meeting regarded by many as the best the year and one for racing purists, the Group 1 $2 million Victoria Derby (2500m) is the main event on the program.
A Group 3 race, the event is the last chance to qualify for the Group 1 $8 million Melbourne Cup (3200m) run at Flemington the following Tuesday with the winner of the Lexus Stakes exempt from the ballot for the ‘Race That Stops A Nation’ if it was a first, second and final acceptor. The last horse to win the Lexus Stakes and go on and win the Cup three days later was Shocking in 2009.
The latest edition of the Lexus Stakes ran on Saturday October 30, 2021 as the Lexus Hotham Handicap and was won by the Chris Waller-trained Great House ahead of the $8 million Melbourne Cup.

- To Win: #3 Le Don De Vie ($10 at time of publish)
Going to say Great House gets scratched (if he runs, he wins) with the favourite now secured of a run in the Melbourne Cup field. If that happens, this race gets blown wide open and Le Don De Vie looks top value. D. Oliver rides the import who gets the chance to improve on some poor runs down under. His last start fifth in the Geelong Cup however was full of merit and he can build on that fit third-up.
