Pago Pago Stakes 2022

Saturday March 12, 2022

Ladbrokes Tip: The Pago Pago Stakes form has stacked up in the Inglis’ Sires Stakes in recent years

The Group 3 Pago Pago Stakes is held at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse on Coolmore Classic Day on a Saturday in mid-March during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. The meeting’s feature race is the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) for fillies and mares, which is supported by a number of other Group status events including the Pago Pago Stakes.

Open only to two-years-old colts and geldings the Pago Pago Stakes is run at set weights over a 1200m spring distance. There is $175,000 in total prize money on offer including nearly $100,000 for the winning connections.

The Pago Pago Stakes winner is exempt from ballot for the Group 1 $5 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) back at the track the following Saturday.

The Pago Pago Stakes – Golden Slipper Stakes double was most recently achieved by Stratum in 2005, while in 2013 the Pago Pago winner Sidestep crossed second to Overreach in the Golden Slipper next run.

In 2020 the Pago Pago Stakes winner Prague went on to run second in that year’s Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).

The latest edition of the Pago Pago Stakes took place on Saturday March 12, 2022 and saw Rise Of The Masses ($7) lead all-the-way for the Waterhouse/Bott stable.

Pago Pago Stakes Betting

Pago Pago Stakes odds favour two-year-olds with proven experience over the 1200m and those with winning Sydney lead-up form over the autumn. Upsets are more common in the Pago Pago Stakes than in the fillies’ equivalent run on the same day, the Magic Night Stakes, with the latest winner to salute at double figures being Tarquin ($12 in 2015).

The 2018 Pago Pago Stakes betting favourite got the job done however with Written By, earlier winner of the Blue Diamond Stakes, odds-on. Cosmic Force ($3.50 in 2019) was the last Pago Pago Stakes favourite to salute for the punters.

Pago Pago Stakes betting markets open on the Wednesday afternoon before the race following the release of the final field of acceptances and barriers.

Many Pago Pago Stakes runners are also gearing up for autumn assignments over further distance including the Group 1 ATC Inglis’ Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) at Randwick during The Championships in April.

In 2015 Rageese ran second in both the Pago Pago Stakes and the Inglis Sires’ Produce when he tied for second in the latter with that year’s Pago Pago third placegetter Odyssey Moon.

Horses in the Pago Pago Stakes field may have earlier contested Rosehill’s Group 3 Canonbury Stakes (1100m) and Prague (2021) was the last to do the double.

Laying the favourite is another solid Pago Pago Stakes betting tip to consider with plenty of upset results occurring in the race in recent history. 2022 Pago Pago Stakes Tips

Our Ladbrokes’ insider Pago Pago Stakes 2022 betting tips will be detailed below the week of the race with the two-year-olds to back and sack in the final Golden Slipper Stakes lead-up.

  • To Win: #1 Sweet Ride ($6.50 at time of publish)

Typically open affair in the Pago this year and like the value in Sweet Ride, a well-proven and nicely-placed dual winner for Annabel Neasham. The Deep Field colt has his fourth career start on the back of a runaway Black Opal Preview win in Canberra. If he runs in this and doesn’t scratch out in favour of the Group 3 Black Opal in the nation’s capital on Sunday, he can win.
