Ladbrokes Tip: The Pago Pago Stakes form has stacked up in the Inglis’ Sires Stakes in recent years.

The Group 3 Pago Pago Stakes is held at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse on Coolmore Classic Day on a Saturday in mid-March during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. The meeting’s feature race is the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) for fillies and mares, which is supported by a number of other Group status events including the Pago Pago Stakes.

Open only to two-years-old colts and geldings the Pago Pago Stakes is run at set weights over a 1200m spring distance. There is $250,000 in total prize money on offer including $140,000 for the winning connections.

The Pago Pago Stakes winner is exempt from ballot for the Group 1 $4.92 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) back at the track the following Saturday.

The Pago Pago Stakes – Golden Slipper Stakes double was most recently achieved by Stratum in 2005 and Shinzo (2023).

In 2020 the Pago Pago Stakes winner Prague went on to run second in that year’s Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).

The latest edition of the Pago Pago Stakes took place on Saturday March 16, 2024 at Rosehill Gardens with the progressive Blue Diamond graduate Dublin Down ($20) securing a ballot free ride into the Golden Slipper field after an eye-catching upset.

Pago Pago Stakes Betting

Pago Pago Stakes odds favour two-year-olds with proven experience over the 1200m and those with winning Sydney lead-up form over the autumn. Upsets are more common in the Pago Pago Stakes than in the fillies’ equivalent run on the same day, the Magic Night Stakes, with the latest winner to salute at double figures being Tarquin ($12 in 2015).

The 2018 Pago Pago Stakes betting favourite got the job done however with Written By, earlier winner of the Blue Diamond Stakes, odds-on. Cosmic Force ($3.50 in 2019) was the last Pago Pago Stakes favourite to salute for the punters.

There was a notable upset in 2024 with Dublin Down winning at Pago Pago Stakes odds of $20.

Pago Pago Stakes betting markets open on the Wednesday afternoon before the race following the release of the final field of acceptances and barriers.

Pago Pago Stakes Field

Many Pago Pago Stakes runners are also gearing up for autumn assignments over further distance including the Group 1 ATC Inglis’ Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) at Randwick during The Championships in April.

In 2015 Rageese ran second in both the Pago Pago Stakes and the Inglis Sires’ Produce when he tied for second in the latter with that year’s Pago Pago third place-getter Odyssey Moon.

Horses in the Pago Pago Stakes field may have earlier contested Rosehill’s Group 3 Canonbury Stakes (1100m) and Prague (2021) was the last to do the double.

In 2023 Shinzo won the Pago Pago Stakes third-up breaking his maiden status after running third in the Canonbury and second in the Group 2 Skyline Stakes ahead of his success in that year’s Golden Slipper.

Pago Pago Stakes nominations close the Monday before the race with the final field and barrier draw out on the Wednesday.

Pago Pago Stakes Tips

Pago Pago Stakes tips include looking for juveniles with good lead-up runs over similar distance races in Sydney and for those with previous black-type form on their record.

Laying the favourite is another solid Pago Pago Stakes betting tip to consider with plenty of upset results occurring in the race in recent history.

Traditional lead-up races into the Pago Pago Stakes to consider when doing your tips include the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) and Group 2 Skyline Stakes (1200m) both held in Sydney in the lead-up. In 2023 Shinzo improved on a lead-up second in the Skyline to win the Pago Pago for trainer Chris Waller.

In 2024 the Pago Pago Stakes winner Dublin Down came via a lead-up Melbourne run the month before in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) improving on a 12th finish there.

2024 Pago Pago Stakes Tips

Our Ladbrokes’ insider Pago Pago Stakes 2024 betting tips will be detailed below the week of the race with the two-year-olds to back and sack in the final Golden Slipper Stakes lead-up.

  • To Win: #2 Parkour ($16 at time of publish) – BET NOW

Typically open edition of the 2YOs Pago Pago with a number of genuine hopes, but for a value punt Parkour looks to be winding up back to his best at a big price here. Fourth start now and is second-up off a credible fourth placing from the James Cummings-trained Extreme Choice colt in the Group 2 Skyline Stakes. Plenty between him and the winner Storm Boy there, but he won before the spell at Randwick with 58kg and is well weighted here. Good gate, Kerrin McEvoy comes on. Sniff an upset.
