The Group 3 Pago Pago Stakes is held at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse on Coolmore Classic Day on a Saturday in mid-March during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. Open only to two-years-old colts and geldings the Pago Pago Stakes is run at set weights over a 1200m spring distance. There is $175,000 in total prize money on offer including nearly $100,000 for the winning connections.

The Pago Pago Stakes winner is exempt from ballot for the Group 1 $3.5 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) back at the track the following Saturday.

Pago Pago Stakes Betting & Odds

Pago Pago Stakes odds favour two-year-olds with proven experience over the 1200m and those with winning Sydney lead-up form over the autumn. Upsets are more common in the Pago Pago Stakes than in the fillies’ equivalent run on the same day, the Magic Night Stakes, with the latest winner to salute at double figures being Tarquin ($12 in 2015).

The 2018 Pago Pago Stakes betting favourite got the job done however with Written By, earlier winner of the Blue Diamond Stakes, odds-on. Cosmic Force ($3.50 in 2019) was the last Pago Pago Stakes favourite to salute for the punters.

Pago Pago Stakes betting markets open on the Wednesday afternoon before the race following the release of the final field of acceptances and barriers.

In 2015 Rageese ran second in both the Pago Pago Stakes and the Inglis Sires’ Produce when he tied for second in the latter with that year’s Pago Pago third placegetter Odyssey Moon.
