Golden Slipper Tips
Each autumn Golden Slipper Stakes tips favour horses coming off a first or second in their lead-up run. From 2003 – 2016, eight of the fourteen Golden Slipper Stakes winners came off a win.
The last start winners were back on top of the Golden Slipper results again in 2018 when the filly Estijaab did the Reisling Stakes – Golden Slipper double, 2019 with the Godolphin-raced filly Kiamichi backed up from her Magic Night Stakes win the Saturday prior to take out the feature and in 2020 with Farnan completing the Todman Stakes – Golden Slipper double for seven-time winning trainer Waterhouse.
Fireburn (1st in the Sweet Embrace Stakes in 2022) and Shinzo (1st in Pago Pago Stakes in 2023) are the latest last start winners to back-up and win the Golden Slipper.
The best lead-up races are the Todman Stakes and Reisling Stakes, and the winners of these Group 2 events are usually a hot Golden Slipper Stakes tip.
Class traditionally prevails over anything else in the Golden Slipper Stakes tips and results with the season’s best two-year-olds able to overcome a wide barrier draw to win.
Two Golden Slipper Stakes winners have won from the outside barrier 16 draw in recent years with Phelan Ready (2009) and Vancouver (16). Barrier 14 meanwhile produced back-to-back Golden Slipper winning fillies in Estijaab (2018) and Kiamichi (2019), before Farnan won from 12 of 16 in 2020.
Barrier one however has produced more Golden Slipper winners in the past 30 plus years than any other gate with nine victories since 1983 – most recently Fireburn (1 of 16 in 2022) and Shinzo (1 of 15 in 2023) – so looking for the rails-drawn runner is a nice tip.

The Golden Slipper Stakes is the richest race for two-year-olds in not only Australia but the world and highlights the early Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival action at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse each March.

Offering a lucrative $5 million in total prize money the 1200m sprint for juveniles is run at set weights. Colts and geldings in the Golden Slipper Stakes field carry 56.5kg while the fillies taking on the boys in the classic carry 54.5kg.

Seven earlier lead-up races offer a Golden Slipper Stakes ballot exemption to the winner: Silver Slipper Stakes, Sweet Embrace Stakes, Skyline Stakes, Reisling Stakes, Todman Stakes, Magic Night Stakes, and Pago Pago Stakes.
Of those the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) at Randwick a fortnight before for colts and geldings has been one of the best guides to the Golden Slipper Stakes with recent winners of the double being Farnan (2020), Vancouver (2015), and Pierro (2012).
The Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) has also produced a number of recent Golden Slipper winning fillies with Estijaab (2018) the last to do the double.
Most recently Fireburn completed the Sweet Embrace Stakes – Golden Slipper double in 2022.
Fireburn also went on to win that year’s Group 1 Inglis Sires’ (1400m) and finish second in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) that autumn.
Chris Waller’s maiden Golden Slipper winner Shinzo (2023) was the last horse to do the Pago Pago Stakes – Golden Slipper Stakes double.
The recently boosted $1 million Golden Gift (1100m) for two-year-olds held the November prior at Rosehill is now also a nice lead-up into the Golden Slipper, which the 2015 runner-up Yankee Rose won on way to the multi-million dollar event.
Trainer Gai Waterhouse posted her record extending eighth Golden Slipper win in 2024 with the filly Lady Of Camelot saluting on the back of a lead-up Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes second in Melbourne.
