Chilly Girl ($4.20) made the perfect start to her career with a polished all-the-way victory in the 2026 Widden Stakes results at Rosehill, backing up her strong trial work and showcasing the talent expected of a well-bred Trapeze Artist filly from the Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou yard. With Tim Clark dictating terms from the jump, she travelled comfortably in front before producing a sharp late kick to fend off the closing challenge of Miss Chanel. The impressive debut immediately caught the attention of punters, with her all-in Golden Slipper quote slashed from $51 to $13 as she surged into early contention.

Widden Stakes Tips

Good Widden Stakes tips include looking for in-form Sydney fillies that have previous Group form, ran well last time out if not on debut, are drawn well in the Rosehill race and have winning form over at least 1000m.

Another top Widden Stakes betting tip is to take the winner to finish in the money next start in another Golden Slipper lead-up such as the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1200m) against the colts and geldings and or the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) for fillies.

The Group 3 Widden Stakes is a short-distance sprint contested over 1100m at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in late January as part of the early Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival lead-up races.

The set weights plus penalties showdown is open only to two-year-old fillies and runs alongside the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) along with the Group 3 Canonbury Stakes (1100m) which is the colts’ and geldings’ equivalent to the Widden Stakes.

Both the Widden Stakes and Canonbury Stakes offer $250,000 in prize money as of 2024.

Traditionally the Widden Stakes is used as a springboard for young fillies eyeing a run in that season’s upcoming Group 1 $4.96 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m).

Run and won since 1943 and gaining Group 3 status in 2014, the event is named after Widden Stud in New South Wales where many champion sires have stood including Marscay, Vain, Bletchingly, Todman, and General Nediym.

To date three fillies have completed the Widden Stakes – Golden Slipper Stakes double with Overreach (2013), Mossfun (2014), and a decade later Lady Of Camelot (2024).

In 2023 the Widden Stakes winning filly Learning To Fly backed-up from her successful debut to salute for the punters next start in the lucrative $2 million Restricted Listed Inglis Millennium (1100m) followed by a win in the Reisling Stakes before she lost her rider in the Golden Slipper that autumn.

Widden Stakes Betting

Widden Stakes betting opens at bookies around the country after the field of final acceptors and barriers are out the Wednesday of race week.

Young fillies that are resuming and run well fresh, proven Rosehill performers, sprinters with previous form over the 1100m distance and runners coming off any earlier Black-Type Sydney assignments sit high up the Widden Stakes odds.

Many two-year-olds may be on debut in the Widden Stakes, so those with strong lead-up trials are often at shorter odds. Learning To Fly (2023) and Chilly Girl (2026) are the latest debutant Widden Stakes winners.

Favourites have a solid recent record in the race with Away Game ($2.10 in 2020) and Lady Of Camelot ($1.60 in 2024) the latest Widden Stakes favourites to salute.

Widden Stakes Field

The Widden Stakes race field features a line-up of promising young fillies either coming off a summer run or kicking off their new season campaigns.

If not resuming racing, eligible fillies in the Widden Stakes field may have contested the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) on the Gold Coast in mid-January and Away Game (2020) was the last to do the double.

The Playwright (4th in 2025) was the last Magic Millions 2YO Classic graduate to back-up and win the Widden Stakes.
