Ladbrokes Tip: Mares have an excellent recent record over the boys in the Perth Cup
The Perth Cup is a Group 2 staying showdown contested over the mile and a half at Ascot Racecourse in Western Australia each January during the Perth Summer Racing Carnival.
The 2400m quality handicap clash offers a lucrative $1,000,000 in total prize money after having its stakes doubled ahead of the 2024 edition.
Perth Cup Day is one of the biggest summer race meetings anywhere in Australia.
Traditionally held on New Year’s Day, there were two editions of the 2016 Perth Cup one run in January and the other on New Year’s Eve in December. That meant there was no official 2017 Perth Cup, with the next edition run on New Year’s Day in 2018. Perth Cup Day is the final race meeting of the annual Festival of Perth Racing and the day’s feature has run since 1887.
In more recent years, the Perth Cup has taken place on the first Saturday of the New Year in early January*.
*The 2023 Perth Cup was rescheduled for January 14th following the original event being called off for the first time in the race’s 136-year history due to a horrific race fall that resulted in the death of mare Chili Is Hot.
Previously contested over the two miles (3200m) like the iconic Melbourne Cup, in 2009 the Perth Cup distance was shortened to the current 2400m and has been attracting top-class stayers since.
The traditional lead-up race is the Group 2 Ted Van Heemst Stakes (2100m), previously known as the CB Cox Stakes, run at Ascot in December and the last horse to complete the CB Cox Stakes – Perth Cup double was Delicacy (December 2015 & January 2016). The Group 1 Northerly Stakes (1800m) – formerly the Kingston Town Classic – also serves as a nice Perth Cup lead-up race.
Owner Bob Peters enjoyed his historic 10th Perth Cup victory in 2022 with the Grant & Alana Williams-trained Midnight Blue.
The 2024 Perth Cup results saw co-trainer Grant Williams celebrate his fifth success and jockey William Pike his fourth victory with the win by race favourite Casino Seventeen.
The latest edition of the Perth Cup ran on Monday January 1, 2024 offering $1 million in prize money and was on by the Grant & Alana Williams-trained top elect Casino Seventeen ($2.70F).
2024 Perth Cup Results
- 1st: #7 Casino Seventeen
- 2nd: #4 Be Optimistic

New Year’s Day at Ascot lived up to the hype with a heart-stopping 2024 Perth Cup result! Casino Seventeen ($2.70F), the well-travelled Casino Prince six-year-old, turned heartbreak (Ted Van Heemst third) into triumph with a well-deserved victory for the punters. Co-trainer Grant Williams (5th Perth Cup!) cheered as jockey William Pike (4th!) urged his mount home, just holding off Be Optimistic’s late charge.

Perth Cup Betting
Perth Cup odds open weeks in advance of the race with bookmakers around the country offering futures prices and all-in markets on the event.
Local stayers with proven form at Ascot and over the 2400m dominate Perth Cup betting each summer, as do Grant Williams-trained runners with the right lead-up form as he has trained multiple winners of the classic in recent years including the latest – Casino Seventeen (2024) – in partnership with his daughter Alana.
The best out of the Ted Van Heemst (formerly CB Cox Stakes) earlier in the festival often feature high up the markets and in-form mares make a nice bet with the girls boasting a top recent record thanks to wins by the likes of Mississippi Delta (2020), Delicacy (January 2016), Real Love (2015), and Talent Show (2013).
Midnight Blue ($4.20 in 2022), who handed owner Bob Peters a record 10th victory in the race, Buster Bash ($5 in 2023), and Grant Williams’ fifth champion Casino Seventeen ($2.70 in 2024) are the latest favourites in Perth Cup betting to win.
Perth Cup Field
The Perth Cup race field attracts a line-up of primarily local stayers that do battle over the 2400m.
Some interstate raiders have contested recent editions of the race including the December 2016 win by the Darren Weir-trained Star Exhibit, but more often than not the Perth Cup trophy stays at home in WA.
Star Exhibit returned to win the 2019 Perth Cup but not for Weir having been transferred to the local Karnup stables of Adam Durrant. Star Exhibit also finished a close fourth in the 2020 Perth Cup results only 1.6 lengths off the winner Mississippi Delta.
Delicacy (pictured in Adelaide) is one of the shortest-priced recent Perth Cup winners having won at $2.40 in January of 2016. Photo: Jenny Barnes.
The bulk of the Perth Cup field come via a run in the weight-for-age CB Cox Stakes – now known as the Ted Van Heemst Stakes – at the same track over 300m shorter the month before.
The CB Cox Stakes – Perth Cup is a popular betting double.
The 2024 Perth Cup winner Casino Seventeen (3rd in the 2023 Ted Van Heemst Stakes) was the last Ted Van Heemst graduate to back-up and win the Group 2 on New Year’s Day.
Sydney’s Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) held on Boxing Day at Randwick also serves as a potential Perth Cup lead-up race.
Perth Cup nominations close a month prior to the race in the first week of December before the final field of acceptances and barrier draw is released the week of the race.
2024 Perth Cup Field
The official Perth Cup 2024 Final Field & Barrier Draw will be released by Perth Racing the week before the race is run and won in the first week of January so stay tuned to see what summer stayers make the starting line-up.
2024 Perth Cup Nominations
The official Perth Cup 2024 Nominations are taken around four weeks out from Perth Cup Day and attract the top summer stayers getting about in WA for the season.
The 2024 Perth Cup nominations close on Monday the 27th of November, 2023.
The Perth Cup 2024 nominations are now out featuring 45 summer stayers led in all-in betting by the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Five Diamonds runner-up Zoumon and talented local gelding Casino Seventeen from the stables of Grant & Alana Williams.

Perth Cup Tips
Perth Cup betting tips usually feature proven stayers at the track and distance from local stables and graduates out of the Ted Van Heemst earlier during the Perth Summer Carnival of Racing.
Grant Williams-trained runners have a very good recent Perth Cup record so a good tip is to get behind his in-form stayers of the current season, especially the mares.
2024 Perth Cup Tips
Our Ladbrokes’ insider Perth Cup 2024 Tips and summer betting guide on the Group 2 staying showdown will be detailed below the week of the event so stay tuned for the stayers to back and sack.
Perth Cup Form Guide
The Perth Cup form guide provides punters with all the must-know information on the race before placing bets like saddlecloth numbers, jockeys, trainers, barriers and the weights each runner in the field is to carry.
Wide barriers can be overcome in the Perth Cup, as can big weights proven most recently by Delicacy who carried 59kg to victory in the January edition in 2016. She was the second mare in as many years to beat home the boys in the Perth Cup results, so looking for in-form female stayers on the Perth Cup form guide can prove profitable.
It is interesting to note that barrier four produced three straight Perth Cup winners from 2021-23, so looking for runners drawn in gate four on the form could be key.
2024 Perth Cup Form Guide
A link to a comprehensive Perth Cup 2024 Form Guide will be provided for punters below the week of the race.
Perth Cup Results
Perth Cup race results have been dominated over the past decade by local stayers coming out of a run in the CB Cox Stakes (now the Ted Van Heemst) – a double recently achieved by the likes of Delicacy (January 2016), Lords Ransom (2010), and Cats Fun (2008).
Favourites have a strong Perth Cup record, but upsets are also not uncommon including in 2013 when Talent Show saluted at $31 on the back of a CB Cox Stakes fourth – the same lead-up placing as the follow year’s Perth Cup winner Black Tycoon (2014).
Bob Peters holds the record of Perth Cup wins by a owner celebrating his 10th in 2022 with Midnight Blue.
Field Officer (1993) was the last three-year-old Perth Cup winner. No filly has won the Perth Cup.
Mississippi Delta (2020) was the last Perth Cup winning mare.
