RA Lee Stakes 2022

The RA Lee Stakes is a Group 3 mile race run and won over 1600m at Morphettville Racecourse each May during the Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival.

Open to horses aged three-years-old and above, the set weights plus penalties event offers $152,250 in prize money and is officially registered as the Robert A. Lee Stakes.

It is named in honour of South Australian Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame inductee Robert A. Lee (2011) and was first contested in 1979.

Formerly part of Adelaide Cup Day, the RA Lee Stakes now takes place on The Goodwood Day with racing at the meeting headlined by the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m).

The other key The Goodwood Day support acts include the: Group 3 SA Fillies Classic (2500m), Group 3 Proud Miss Stakes (1200m) and the Group 3 National Stakes (1200m).

The RA Lee Stakes has held Group 3 status since 2006.

The latest edition of the RA Lee Stakes ran on Saturday May 21, 2022 at Morphettville Racecourse and was won by the in-form Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained mare Belle Plaisir ($7.50).

Any mares in the RA Lee Stakes field may come via a lead-up run at the same track and distance a fortnight earlier in the Group 2 Queen Of The South Stakes (1600m) and in 2020 Seabrook ran second in both events. The latest RA Lee Stakes winner to come via the Queen Of The South Stakes was Belle Plaisir (4th in 2022).

Nominations for the RA Lee Stakes are taken on the Monday of race week, with the final RA Lee Stakes field of acceptors out on the Wednesday.

Good price on offer for last month’s Golden Mile winner at Bendigo. Comes off a beaten run at Flemington with more weight when fifth, only two lengths beaten. Great 1600m record (6:3-2-1) and he won last year’s Adelaide Guineas at this track/distance by three lengths. Group 1 Australian Guineas second as a three-year-old and, arguably not going around in that high a grade as a four-year-old, but still looks well-rated here.
