While the meeting’s feature race is the Group 1 $4.96 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) for two-year-olds, plenty of talented gallopers run across the card including in the Ranvet Stakes field. The event is contested over 2000m under weight-for-age conditions and offers $1,000,000 in total prize money including $580,000 for the Ranvet Stakes winner as of 2023.

The traditional Ranvet Stakes lead-up is the Verry Elleegant Stakes (formerly Chipping Norton Stakes) and the double was last achieved by that year’s subsequent Melbourne Cup champion, the ill-fated Verry Elleegant (2021).

The Ranvet Stakes winner is also exempt from ballot for a number of other upcoming features during The Championships in April with many backing up in the Tancred Stakes (formerly The BMW), Queen Elizabeth Stakes and or the Sydney Cup over the two miles.

Avilius (2019) was the last galloper to complete the Ranvet Stakes – Tancred Stakes double, while UK raider Addeybb backed-up from his 2020 Ranvet victory to take out the Queen Elizabeth Stakes next-up.

In 2021 the same two horses from the previous year ran the Ranvet Stakes quinella in a thriller with Verry Elleegant reversing the order with her win over Addeybb.

The following year, Verry Elleegant returned as the odds-on favourite only to run second to Montefilia in an upset while Angel Of Truth ran third for the second year in a row.

In 2023 another UK raider prepared by William Haggas, Dubai Honour, completed the Ranvet Stakes – Queen Elizabeth Stakes double emulating the feat of his stablemate Addeybb from 2021.

The internationals dominated the Ranvet Stakes 2024 results with the Yu Long Investment imports, Via Sistina and Place Du Carrousel, running one-two on debut down under.

Via Sistina returned to secure her eighth Group 1 success with back-to-back wins as the odds-on favourite in 2025.

Ranvet Stakes Betting

Ranvet Stakes betting odds are usually dominated by proven weight-for-age horses with winning form at least up to 1600m. Horses that finished first or second in their lead-up runs also feature up the top half of Ranvet Stakes betting each year especially last start winners.

Of 19 the Ranvet Stakes winners from 2006 – 2025 all but six finished either first or second in their lead-up run. The Chipping Norton Stakes (now Verry Elleegant Stkaes) produced nine of those winners with another five coming out of the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m), most recently Gailo Chop (2nd in 2018) and Avilius (5th in 2019), run over the same distance at Flemington in Melbourne the week before.

In 2022 Montefilia improved on a seventh in the Chipping Norton to turn the tables on Verry Elleegant and post an upset win in the Ranvet Stakes at $9.50.

The 2024 Ranvet Stakes winner Via Sistina won the race in her first start in Australia for Chris Waller as a world class import.

Via Sistina then completed the Verry Elleegant Stakes / Ranvet Stakes double in 2025.

Favourites in Ranvet Stakes betting have an imposing record over the past decade or so with 11 saluting from 2005 – 202 – most recently Avilius ($4.40 in 2019) and Via Sistina ($2.30 in 2024 & $1.22 in 2025) – including six on the trot from 2005 – 2009. In that time there were also a number of standout upsets with Zavite scoring at 100/1 in 2011 and Foreteller jumping at 30/1 for his 2013 win.

Gai Waterhouse-trained horses are also prominent in the Ranvet Stakes markets as she has prepared seven winners since 1996 including four consecutive champions from 2007 – 2010.

Ranvet Stakes Field

The Ranvet Stakes race field traditionally attracts under its capacity number of starters and hadn’t attracted more than 13 runners since McGinty won the 1984 edition defeating 14 rivals until 2019 when Avilius beat home 13 other runners. Under 10 horses started in the 2025 (6), 2024 (6), 2023 (7), 2022 (6), 2021 (9), 2020 (7), 2018 (8), 2017 (7), 2016 (9), 2015 (7), and 2014 (9) Ranvet Stakes fields and favourites have dominated the race over the past decade.

Horses come into the Ranvet Stakes field via a number of different autumn lead-ups but the traditional preparatory run is in the Group 1 Verry Elleegant Stakes (1600m), run as the Chipping Norton Stakes up until 2024, three weeks earlier.

Ranvet Stakes nominations close the Monday before the race with the final field of acceptances and barrier draw out on the Wednesday.

Ranvet Stakes Tips

Ranvet Stakes tips favour in-form weight-for-age horses that finished first or second in the Verry Elleegant Stakes in the lead-up.

Tipping the Ranvet Stakes favourite has proved a goldmine for punters over the past two decades with the shortest priced in the markets coming up trumps more often than not.

The weight-for-age conditions of the race favour experienced performers and Ranvet Stakes tips often sway towards horses aged five or over with just three horses younger than five winning from 2006 – 2025 most recently Montefilia (4yo mare in 2022).

  • To Win: #6 Via Sistina ($1.45 at time of publish) – BET NOW

The odds are short on last year’s winning mare Via Sistina to go back-to-back in the Ranvet for the first time since Tie The Knot (2000-2001) but for very good reason. She made an immediate impact on the Australian racing scene in this very race when debuting for the Waller yard 12 months ago and has gone from strength to strength since. The now seven-year-old daughter of Fastnet Rock comes into her title defence as a seven-time Group 1 winner following her second-up success in the Verry Elleegant Stakes. That race has proved a superior form line to follow into the Ranvet and the step-up from a mile to 2000m now looks ideal. She’s fit and full of confidence facing just six rivals. Won three straight elite levels over this distance in the spring completing the Turnbull – Cox Plate- Champions Stakes treble in Melbourne. The Cox Plate was by eight lengths, and she faces nothing of that grade here. Barrier 2 with the best jockey (James McDonald) on the best horse. Wins.

Ranvet Stakes Form Guide

The 2024 Ranvet Stakes form was firmly franked with the winner Via Sistina continuing on to run second in the Queen Elizabeth before returning for an enormous spring that included victories in the Winx Stakes, Turnbull Stakes, Cox Plate that she won by eight lengths, and Champions Stakes.

Via Sistina won her eighth career Group 1 in the 2025 Ranvet Stakes results.
