Ranvet Stakes 2021

Saturday March 27, 2021

Note: The 2021 Ranvet Stakes was postponed until Saturday March 27th, 2021 due to heavy rainfall and unsafe track conditions at Rosehill Gardens.

Ladbrokes Tip: The Chipping Norton Stakes produces more Ranvet Stakes winners than any other lead-up race

The Ranvet Stakes is one of five elite level Group 1 races run at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse on Golden Slipper Day in March during the annual Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

While the meeting’s feature race is the Group 1 $3.5 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) for two-year-olds, plenty of talented gallopers run across the card including in the Ranvet Stakes field. The event is contested over 2000m under weight-for-age conditions and offers a juicy $700,000 in total prize money including $402,000 for the Ranvet Stakes winner.

The traditional Ranvet Stakes lead-up is the Chipping Norton Stakes and the double was last achieved by Verry Elleegant (2021).

The Ranvet Stakes winner is also exempt from ballot for a number of other upcoming features during The Championships in April with many backing up in the Tancred Stakes (formerly The BMW), Queen Elizabeth Stakes and or the Sydney Cup over the two miles.

Avilius (2019) was the last galloper to complete the Ranvet Stakes – Tancred Stakes double, while UK raider Addeybb backed-up from his 2020 Ranvet victory to take out the Queen Elizabeth Stakes next-up.

In 2021 the same two horses from the previous year ran the Ranvet Stakes quinella in a thriller with Verry Elleegant reversing the order with her win over Addeybb.

The latest edition of the Ranvet Stakes ran on Saturday March 27, 2021 and saw Verry Elleegant turn the tables on Addeybb in a thrilling race.

Ranvet Stakes Odds & Betting

Ranvet Stakes odds are usually dominated by proven weight-for-age horses with winning form at least up to 1600m. Horses that finished first or second in their lead-up runs also feature up the top half of Ranvet Stakes betting each year especially last start winners.

Of 15 the Ranvet Stakes winners from 2006 – 2021 all but four finished either first or second in their lead-up run. The Chipping Norton Stakes produced seven of those winners with another five coming out of the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m), most recently Gailo Chop (2nd in 2018) and Avilius (5th in 2019), run over the same distance at Flemington in Melbourne the week before.

Favourites in Ranvet Stakes betting have an imposing record over the past decade or so with nine saluting from 2005 – 2021 – most recently Avilius ($4.40 in 2019) – including six on the trot from 2005 – 2009. In that time there were also a number of standout upsets with Zavite scoring at 100/1 in 2011 and Foreteller jumping at 30/1 for his 2013 win.

Gai Waterhouse-trained horses are also prominent in the Ranvet Stakes markets as she has prepared seven winners since 1996 including four consecutive champions from 2007 – 2010.

Ranvet Stakes Tips

Ranvet Stakes tips favour in-form weight-for-age horses that finished first or second in the Chipping Norton Stakes in the lead-up.

Tipping the Ranvet Stakes favourite has proved a goldmine for punters over the past two decades with the shortest priced in the markets coming up trumps more often than not. The weight-for-age conditions of the race favour experienced performers and Ranvet Stakes tips often sway towards horses aged five or over with just two horses younger than five winning from 2006 – 2021.

  • To Win: #6 Verry Elleegant ($2.80 at time of publish)

He was too good for her twice last year in this and the Queen Elizabeth, but think Verry Elleegant is an even better and fitter mare here and is doing everything to suggest she can turn the tables on the returning UK raider Addeybb. It should be a cracking showdown as these two WFA stars renew their rivalry and Waller’s Caulfield Cup champion from the spring should relish getting out over further off her Group 1 Chipping Norton win last time out over a mile. She loves Rosehill (4:3-1-0) with her only loss at the track being her second in the Ranvet last year, and is a proven mudlark. Only concern is the inside alley on a rain-affected course.

Ranvet Stakes Form Guide

The Ranvet Stakes form guide shows punters all the essential information from the barrier positions to the jockeys and trainers of each runner in the field.

Ravent Stakes betting favoured the 2015 winner Contributer

Looking out for Gai Waterhouse’s name in the Ranvet Stakes form guide is always a good idea as she has prepared more Ranvet Stakes winners than any other trainer, most recently dual champion Theseo (2009-10).

Mares also have a solid record against the boys and are worth doing the Ranvet Stakes form of with four saluting between 2003 – 2015 including Silent Achiever (2014), before the 2021 win by Verry Elleegant.

Ranvet Stakes Form Facts

  • In the 17 years from 2005 – 2021 nine Ranvet Stakes winners jumped favourite for the punters
  • Verry Elleegant (2021) and Silent Achiever (2014) are the only mare to top the Ranvet Stakes results since Tuesday Joy (2008)
  • No four-year-old has won the Ranvet Stakes since Tuesday Joy in 2008
  • Six-year-olds have dominated the Ranvet Stakes winners’ list over the past decade
  • The only winners from a double-digit Ranvet Stakes barrier since Better Loosen Up (11 of 13 in 1990) have been Theseo (12 of 12 in 2010) and Avilius (10 of 14 in 2019)

Ranvet Stakes Results

The Ranvet Stakes results and finishing order are decided on Golden Slipper Day in March each autumn and show not only that year’s winner but also the winning margin and time.

Upset Ranvet Stakes results over the past decade aren’t as common as in other races however Zavite won as an eight-year-old paying $101 for the win in 2011 as the longest-priced winner in the race’s history.

Noteworthy Ranvet Stakes winners in recent years include Verry Elleegant (2021), Addeybb (2020), Contributer (2015), Desert War (2007) and Tie The Knot (2000 – 2001).
