Redzel History
Earning comparisons to the former champion sprinter Black Caviar, Redzel is the latest superstar on the Australian sprint scene. The picture of consistency over the winter – spring of 2017, this $120,000 bargain buy enjoyed six wins on the trot including most notably the first ever running of Randwick’s $10 million The Everest (1200m).
Redzel enjoyed his first elite level success in the Doomben 10,000 in May of 2017 and became a two-time Group 1 champion when flying down the Flemington straight that November during the Melbourne Cup Carnival to take out the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m).
The Triple Crown Syndications-raced son of Snitzel was purchased from the 2014 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sales a year after the country’s best mare Winx was bought for $230,00 in 2013 from the same sales.
Had the chance to surpass Black Caviar’s prize money ($7.95 million) first-up in the autumn of 2018 as the odds-on favourite in the race named in her honour – the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) – and looked the winner until first-up flyer Redkirk Warrior stole the show in the dying seconds.
Atoned in an easier second-up assignment back at his pet track, Randwick, in the Group 2 $500,000 Challenge Stakes (1000m) as the odds-on favourite on Randwick Guineas Day (March 10) saluting in a race record time of 55.73 seconds pushing his earnings out to $8.2 million.
Went into the TJ Smith Stakes at Royal Randwick on Day 1 of ‘The Championships’ and was the short-priced favourite with the non-inclusion of three-time winner Chautauqua in the line-up, but was run down by the gun three-year-old Trapeze Artist who set a new race record.
Got the chance to add to his Group 1 record and become just the fifth horse in Australasian racing history to reach $9 million in stakes with a title defence in the Doomben 10,000 in Brisbane on May 12, but went down three-quarters of a length running fourth in a blanket finish behind back-in-form mare English.
He then headed to the paddock before a spring return having already secured a slot in the 2018 The Everest field for Yulong Investments.
He returned to racing first up in the Group 3 Concorde Stakes with an impressive win on September 1st at Royal Randwick. The race was hyped as a race in two between another Everest slot holder in Invincible Star who could only manage third in the race.
