Wagga: Race 4
No. 13 Lady Mariana

Lady Mariana is second up and open to improvement today.

She’s only made one appearance at the races since debuting and ultimately finished fourth, beaten around four lengths at Nowra.

She should take plenty of improvement for that experience and something like this looks winnable.

Started odds-on on debut at Nowra but could manage only fourth, beaten just under four lengths by Rebel Terra on soft ground after settling handy and finishing fairly. She had trialled second at Canberra beforehand, so there is still substance in the profile, and Jean Van Overmeire is a strong booking. Well drawn and has plenty of upside.

Wagga: Race 5
No. 7 Hay Deer

Hay Deer takes winning form and improvement into this contest.

The Dubious filly trialled up nicely earlier in the year but ultimately put the writing on the wall with an easy victory in maiden company at Goulburn on debut earlier this month.

This is harder, but she’s got plenty of upside and can go on with it.

Controlled her debut at Goulburn, leading and beating On The Fly by just over two lengths over 1200m after being near the top of betting. That was a mature first performance, and she is already proven at the distance. Proven at 1200m and the one they have to beat.

Wagga: Race 7
No. 4 Sister Shay

Sister Shay rates as a key winning chance at Wagga.

The Shamus Award mare clearly needed her first up run at Seymour to tune up, but she’s a horse that tends to enjoy sharp improvement with a run under her belt, and she’s yet to finish worse than second in three previously second up attempts.

She looks well placed in something like this.

Worked home well first-up in a FM BM70 at Seymour, finishing seventh but beaten just under two lengths after being held up passing the 350m. That gives the run more merit than the position suggests, and her 1400m record is strong with four wins and four placings from 13 starts around the trip. Has a solid 1400m profile and well placed second-up, shapes as a serious danger.

Wagga: Race 8
No. 3 Pietro Road

Pietro Road is the one for me in the last at Wagga today.

Pietro Road proved too good for his rivals here at Wagga second up from a spell, while he was only just denied again at his latest.

In peak order today and with options in the run from the rails draw, I can’t find a reason why he won’t be in the finish again.

Went within a nose of Star Of Lily at this track last start despite beginning slowly and having difficulty getting clear passing the 300m, so there was genuine merit in the defeat as favourite. He had beaten Ditterich here the run prior, again after being slow away, and Carly Frater stays with a solid horse-and-rider record. Already beat Ditterich here and remains a sharp winning threat.
