The Rough Habit Plate is a Group 3 race for three-year-olds held on a Saturday in mid-May at Doomben Racecourse on Doomben 10,000 Day during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival. Offering an increased $250,000 in total prize money as of 2021, the 2000m showdown for young staying types is run at set weights and is a traditional lead-up to the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) over the mile and a half at Eagle Farm.

The feature race at the meeting is the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1200m), with the Group 2 Spirit Of Boom Classic for two-year-olds and the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate for three-year-olds the major support acts on the Doomben card.

The 2020 Rough Habit Plate took place over 2200m at Eagle Farm on Stradbroke Handicap Day offering a reduced $175,000 with no Group 1 Queensland Derby scheduled for the carnival due to COVID-19.

The three-year-olds racing in the Rough Habit Plate are usually eyeing a Queensland Derby run over further and Dark Dream (2018) was the last horse to do the double and the seventh since the Rough Habit was first contested in 1993.

In 2022 the Rough Habit Plate ran at Eagle Farm Racecourse over 2143m.

Rough Habit Plate Betting

Rough Habit Plate betting odds are usually led by three-year-olds with proven ability in Group class races. Sydney raiders with Group winning form or that were Group 1 performed during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival before coming to Queensland often feature high up the Rough Habit Plate betting markets.

Rough Habit Plate betting usually favours proven young stayers with winning form over at least 1,800m or even previous 2400m performers who are down in distance at the 2000m.

Ballistic Boy ($2.80 in 2020) was the last favourite in Rough Habit Plate betting to get the job done.

The biggest recent upset was in 2021 with $71 outsider Criminal Defence won.

There was another notable upset in 2023 with Special Swey saluting for Chris Waller first-up down under at Rough Habit Plate odds of $26, again in 2025 with another Waller outsider Imperialist at $61 and in 2026 with yet another Waller-trained champ in Kilman ($26).

Rough Habit Plate Field

The Rough Habit Plate race field attracts the winter’s best three-year-old hopefuls from both local Brisbane stables and interstate. The bulk of the Rough Habit Plate field continue onto the Queensland Derby field run two weeks later at Eagle Farm.

Youngsters in the Rough Habit Plate field often come off a run in the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1800m) run in Brisbane during late April.

Belmonte (2006) is the last horse to complete the Gunsynd Classic – Rough Habit Plate double.

The Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m) over the mile at Eagle Farm in late April is another key lead-up race into the Rough Habit Plate field each season. Dark Destroyer (2nd in 2022), Imperialist (9th in 2025) and Kilman (4th in 2026) are the latest Queensland Guineas graduates to back-up and win the Rough Habit Plate.

Rough Habit Plate nominations close the Monday before the race with the final field and barriers out on the Wednesday.
