In 2021 the Sandown Guineas and entire Zipping Classic Day card was moved to late November and took place at Caulfield Racecourse where it remained for the 2022 edition.

The 2023 Sandown Guineas ran on the first Saturday of December.

The meeting usually runs on the second Saturday of the month after the Melbourne Cup Carnival finishes up the week before with Champions Stakes Day at Flemington.

Sandown Guineas Day is headlined by two Group 2 races including the Zipping Classic (2400m) for stayers. Also on the card are the Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1300m), Group 3 Eclipse Stakes (1800m), and the Group 3 Summoned Stakes (1500m).

Run over a mile (1600m), the race offers $300,000 in total prize money to the three-year-olds in the field that face off under set weights and is usually the final spring run of the campaign for its contestants.

The latest edition of the Sandown Guineas ran on Saturday December 2, 2023 at Caulfield Racecourse and was won in a 2.5 length upset by the Robbie Griffiths & Mathew de Kock-trained filly Serasana ($13).

  • To Win: #1 Arkansaw Kid ($2.30 at time of publish) – BET NOW

Hard to go past the favourite from the Lindsay Park stable who looks to be doing plenty right ahead of this Group 2 feature. The Harry Angel colt was brave at 40/1 two back when fourth in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) down the Flemington straight on the back of a Black-Type Gothic Stakes win at Caulfield. Last time out was third on November 18 in the Group 3 Blue Sapphire Stakes (1400m) only 2.25 lengths off the winner Run Harry Run. Up in distance to a mile now rock hard fit. Yet to win over further than the six furlongs so there is that question, but this looks winnable for him on class alone.

Sandown Guineas Field

The Sandown Guineas race field attracts a line-up of strong middle-distance performing three-year-olds looking to secure a final Group race win for the spring.

Most gallopers come into the Sandown Guineas field off a Victoria Derby Day at Flemington Racecourse in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m).

Recent winners of the Carbine Club Stakes – Sandown Guineas double include Mahuta (2015), Paximadia (2013) and Kidnapped (2009). In 2016 the Carbine Club Stakes again proved the form to follow into the Sandown Guineas with Morton’s Fork improving on a lead-up second to win.

Another possible lead-up run is the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on Derby Day, a race the 2015 runner-up Dal Cielo (6th) came off. The most recent Sandown Guineas winner to come off a Coolmore Stud Stakes run was Pressday (11th) in 2013.

The 2014 winner Petrology also won his lead-up run at Flemington, while that year’s runner-up Stratum Star came off a Carbine Club Stakes second. Two years earlier in 2012 the Carbine Club Stakes winner Lunar Rise ran second to Tatra in the Sandown Guineas, Tatra turning the tables after a Carbine Club Stakes second.

The nominations are taken the Monday before the race runs on the Saturday with the final field and barrier draw released on the Wednesday.
