The Ingham winner earns a ballot exemption into the next year’s Doncaster Mile field!
The latest edition of The Ingham ran on Saturday December 13, 2025 offering $2 million in prize money plus a ballot exemption for the 2026 Doncaster Mile and was won in a class effort by the favourite Yorkshire ($3.90F).
2025 The Ingham Results

- 1st: No. 13 Yorkshire
- 2nd: No. 3 Estadio Mestalla
- 3rd: No. 4 Robusto
Five-year-old Snitzel gelding Yorkshire ($3.90F) confirmed his rising star status with a commanding win for the punters in Saturday’s 2025 The Ingham results at Randwick, stamping himself as one of the standout milers of the summer. The John O’Shea and Tom Charlton trained galloper, a last start Group 3 Festival Stakes winner, went around as the favourite and delivered exactly what punters expected, surging to the front in the straight and holding off Estadio Mestalla to score decisively. The victory not only added another feature win to his growing résumé but also secured him a coveted ballot-free spot in the following year’s Doncaster Mile, completing a remarkable turnaround after a setback earlier in the prep.

The Ingham Tips
Top The Ingham tips include backing the season’s Festival Stakes graduates that are backing up in the Group 3, proven performers over the Randwick mile and the better weighted runners in the handicap clash.
The Festival Stakes – The Ingham double was last completed by Yorkshire (2025).
Favourites didn’t have the best strike rate in the race over the past decade, so looking at in-form runners further down the markets was a good Ingham Stakes betting tip until the successive wins by Sky Boy (2018) and Quackerjack (2019) for the punters.
When doing The Ingham tips it is also crucial to back the boys over the girls with Dances On Waves (2010) was the last mare to salute before the 2020 success of Greysful Glamour a decade later, while Monton (58kg) is the only horse to have carried more than 54.5kg to victory since Utzon (57.5kg in 2006).

To Win: No. 20 Sabaj
SABAJ (21) might be facing a tricky draw in The Ingham, but I’m taking note of this progressive four‑year‑old who continues to rise through the ranks at the right time.
The Manhattan Rain gelding has been building momentum all spring, and fourth‑up he looks primed to peak.
After resuming with a sixth in the Silver Eagle, he found confidence on Champions Stakes Day at Flemington, carrying a hefty 59.5kg to a dominant two‑length win over the mile.
He franked that form with a tough Cranbourne Cup victory against a strong line‑up, relishing the drop to 54kg.
This weekend he sheds another kilo to just 53kg, with Beau Mertens sticking in the saddle, and that’s a big tick.
The wide gate is a challenge, but with favourite GRINGOTTS also drawn awkwardly, SABAJ has the upside and closing power to overcome the barrier and be charging late into the finish./

The Villiers Stakes – now known as The Ingham – is an end-of-year Group 2 Sydney showdown run in early to mid-December at Royal Randwick Racecourse.
The Summer Racing Carnival in Sydney features a number of top stakes races including the newly revamped The Ingham Stakes, which is the headline event at the meeting that also features the Listed Razor Sharp Handicap (1200m), Listed ATC Cup (2000m) for staying types, and the Restricted Listed $500,000 Inglis Nursery (1000m).

The Ingham now offers now $2 million in prize money after a huge boost in 2022 from $750,000, is contested over 1600m and is an open handicap clash.
Winners of the race often go on to perform well in the next year’s Sydney and Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival features and The Ingham winner earns a ballot exemption for the next year’s Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) at the same track and distance.
The last Villiers Stakes winner to finish in the money in the following year’s Doncaster Mile was upset champ Sense Of Occasion (2016) who took out the Group 2 at $31 odds before a third to It’s Somewhat in the 2017 Doncaster two runs later at an even bigger price.

The Ingham Betting
Horses under $10 The Ingham betting had a strong recent record including the back-to-back wins by the favourites Sky Boy ($3.20 in 2018) and Quackerjack ($3.80 in 2019) in the mile showdown.
There have been a number of upsets however with the latest winners to salute at double-figures odds being All Legal ($17 in 2012), Sense Of Occasion ($31 in 2016), Kirwan’s Lane ($21) who defeated his even longer-priced stablemate Lion’s Roar ($51) in The Ingham 2022 quinella, Loch Eagle ($18) who just made the field as the third emergency, and Robusto ($26 in 2024)
The Ingham odds favour the in-form end-of-spring types getting in on the lower weights.
The Ingham Field
The Ingham race field – formerly the Villiers Stakes field – is made up of promising end-of-season milers that have had a freshen-up off a spring campaign or that missed the spring majors in favour of a later summer – autumn campaign.
One of the premier Sydney Summer Racing Carnival clashes, the field features a host of gallopers coming off a lead-up run in the Festival Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill a fortnight earlier with the winner of that race exempt from ballot for The Ingham.
Runners in The Ingham field may also be on the quick back-up off a lead-up run the Saturday prior in Brisbane’s Group 3 George Moore Stakes (1200m).
Graduates often back-up in either the Sydney or Gold Coast Boxing Day races on December 26 like the Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) at Randwick won in 2014 by the runner-up I’m Imposing.
The Villiers Stakes – Summer Cup double hasn’t been completed since Aqua D’Amore (2005), but in 2023 Lion’s Roar improved on a The Ingham third to win that year’s Summer Cup at his next start.
The Ingham nominations close the Monday of race week with the final field of acceptances and barrier draw out on the Wednesday.
