Ladbrokes Tip: The best fillies out of The Vanity often back-up in the Group 1 Australian Guineas each autumn.

The Group 3 The Vanity is a 1400m race run at set weights plus penalties for three-year-old fillies contested each February during the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival.

Held on Black Caviar Lightning Day alongside the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) and the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) for the colts and geldings, The Vanity offers $200,000 in prize money as of 2022.

Inaugurated in 1986, the event serves as a potential lead-up for fillies looking to take on the boys next-up in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) also run and Flemington Racecourse.

Shamrocker (4th in 2011) and Mosheen (2nd in 2012) are the most recent Australian Guineas winning fillies to come off a lead-up run in The Vanity.

The latest edition of The Vanity ran on Saturday February 19, 2022 at Flemington Racecourse and was won by the favourite Barb Raider ($2.90F).

The Jerome Hunter-trained Barb Raider ($2.90F) was good saluting for the punters in The Vanity 2022 results ahead of a potential run against the colts and geldings in the Group 1 $1 million Australian Guineas over the mile on March 5.

The Vanity Betting

The Vanity betting open after the final field is confirmed on the Wednesday leading-up to race day at Flemington Racecourse over the annual Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival.

Three-year-old fillies with previous Group winning form especially at a higher level in the spring prior, good fresh performers near the start of their autumn campaigns and the proven Flemington fillies traditionally dominate The Vanity odds.

Zou Dancer ($3.60 in 2021) followed by Barb Raider ($2.90 in 2022) are the last favourites in The Vanity betting to win.

The Vanity Field

The Vanity field attracts a quality line-up of three-year-old female gallopers each autumn racing carnival. 

A good lead-up into The Vanity field is the Group 3 Manfred Stakes (1200m) held in early February at Caulfield Racecourse, while many fillies in the mix may have contested the previous spring’s Group 1 VRC Oaks (2500m).  

In 2021 Personal ran second in The Vanity after having won the previous year’s VRC Oaks.

Many The Vanity hopefuls go on to contest the Australian Guineas over the 1600m back at Flemington.

Another potential next-up option for graduates out of The Vanity field is the Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1600m).  Solicit (2014) was the last filly to complete The Vanity – Kewney Stakes double.

The Vanity nominations are taken the Monday before the race with final acceptances and barriers out on the Wednesday.

The official The Vanity 2022 Field & Barriers are announced by Racing Victoria on the Wednesday of race week and published in full below so stay tuned for the full line-up of top autumn three-year-old fillies.

The 2022 The Vanity final field features a smart line-up of three-year-old fillies with Magic Millions 3YO Guineas placed Socialist the one to beat.

The Vanity Tips

The Vanity tips include backing the past Group performing fillies, looking for those with a strong Flemington record and watching for past elite level winners in the mix. 

Looking at The Vanity form any resuming fillies with a good record first-up is also a solid tip with plenty of recent winners having won the race at the start of their preparations. 

Another good The Vanity betting tip is to back the fillies drawn single-digit barriers with no winner having jumped from wider than gate nine since Forest Express (barrier 11 in 2000).

Good price on offer for Cardigan Queen drawn mid-field for the Maher/Eustace stable. Her stablemate Socialist is favourite, but this consistent daughter of Sebring was good last start carrying a big weight to victory over 1300m at Sandown. This is a rise in grade, but think the 1400m will suit and she’s fit and ready to fire.
