Ladbrokes Tip: The Theo Marks Stakes is a good lead-up to the Epsom Handicap trifecta
The Theo Marks Stakes is a Group 2 race held at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse on Run To The Rose Day in September during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival. Contested on the same day as the Group 2 The Run To The Rose for Group 1 Golden Rose-bound three-year-olds, the Theo Marks race is open to horses aged three-years-old and over and is run under quality handicap conditions over 1300m.

Offering a total of $300,000 in prize money as of 2023, the race makes a nice lead-up to tougher spring features like the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Randwick the following month. The last horse to complete the Theo Marks Stakes – Epsom Handicap double in a single season was Winx (2015).
Many horses also now use the Theo Marks Stakes as a lead-up to the world’s richest race on turf – the $20 million The Everest (1400m) at Randwick in October.
The latest edition of the Theo Marks Stakes ran on Saturday, September 14, 2024 as a lead-up to the spring majors in Sydney and was won in a strong, late run by the Gary Portelli-trained Encap ($7).

Big field for the Theo Marks and plenty of talent in the resuming runners but have landed on this consistent So You Think gelding prepared by Anthony & Sam Freedman. He is a six-time winner from a dozen starts to date including back-to-back victories before the break at the Sunshine Coast relishing Heavy going. At his latest he won the Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) by 2.8 lengths. He also boasts good form on good tracks, so the current Slow range at Rosehill looks pretty ideal. Wider out but gate looks a non-issue. Well-weighted with 54kg for his shot at the Group 2. Two nice recent Randwick trials have him spot on. Can win.
