Contested over 1200m at Flemington Racecourse, the event is the key support act on the Australian Cup Day card.

The set weights plus penalties race offers $200,000 in stakes and ran for the first time in 1971.

The race was originally known as the Bloodhorse Breeders Plate and ran over 1400m up until 1996 when the distance was reduced to 1200m.

It also held Group 2 status from 1980 – 1998 before dropping back to Group 3 grade in 1999.

The latest edition of the Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes ran on Saturday March 30, 2024 as part of Australian Cup Day at Flemington and was won in style by progressive Pierata filly Tobeornottobe ($6).
