Ladbrokes Tip: The Thousand Guineas Prelude – Thousand Guineas double is a popular spring bet!
Held on a weekend in mid to late September during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival at Caulfield Racecourse, the Thousand Guineas Prelude is a Group 2 race open to three-year-old fillies.
The set weights plus penalties race, also known as the Tranquil Star Stakes in honour of dual Cox Plate winning mare Tranquil Star (1942, 1944), is one of five Group races at the meeting that is headlined by the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1800m). The equivalent race for colts and geldings, the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m), also runs on the same card as a lead-up to the Caulfield Guineas as does the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) for Caulfield Cup hopefuls and the Group 3 How Now Stakes (1200m) for mares.
The Thousand Guineas Prelude is obviously the traditional preparatory run for fillies heading into the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) back at the track in three weeks. The last filly to complete the Thousand Guineas Prelude – Thousand Guineas double was Irish Lights (2009).
The latest edition of the Thousand Guineas Prelude ran on Saturday September 18, 2021 and was won in an upset by Bon’s A Pearla at 30/1.

The clear and deserving favourite, it’s not a great price but she’s the class filly here coming off the right form and will be hard to beat. Only a quarter-length beaten against the boys when third here last time out in the Group 3 HDF McNeil Stakes and before that was also brave running second from a wide gate fresh in the Group 3 Quezette Stakes.
