Run over 2100m the day prior to Randwick’s Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes Day card, the Wyong Gold Cup is a quality handicap race and the winner of the Wyong Cup Prelude is exempt from ballot for the showdown.
Considered a strong springboard race into the tougher staying races in Sydney over the spring, the Wyong Gold Cup has been won by plenty of nice horses over the years.
The Wyong Gold Cup form has also proven to stack-up in upcoming Group 1 Spring Carnival races like The Metropolitan (2400m). The Verminator (2011) was the last horse to complete the Wyong Gold Cup – The Metropolitan double. He also contested that season’s edition of the coveted Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on the first Tuesday of November.
