The 2015 William Reid Stakes highlight’s the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival action this weekend, and we here at Ladbrokes are offering top odds on the weight-for-age classic running under the lights at Moonee Valley on Friday night.
Won last year by Queensland Spirit Of Boom, this year’s $400,000 Group 1 Brown Baldwin William Reid Stakes (1200m) is due to jump at 9:45pm (AEDT) as Moonee Valley Race 7 with a field of 14 engaged to face off.
We are keeping six of the field safe in betting under double figures to win, our William Reid Stakes markets currently led by Angelic Light at $5.
Why do we think Robbie Griffiths’ mare is the biggest danger?
- Gun barrier four draw
- Damien Oliver who won the race aboard Apache Cat (2009) in the saddle
- Returns to racing and has a good first-up record (4-1-1-2)
- Gun record at Moonee Valley (7-3-2-1)
- Loves the distance (9-3-3-1)
- Five starts for four top two runs (5-2-2-0) at the track & distance
A five-year-old daughter of Holy Roman Emperor, Angelic Light was last seen running fifth to Magnifisio when sent to Perth last November after a strong Melbourne campaign in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m).
Her run before that was a very brave second when a nose off the world’s equal highest rated sprinter Lankan Rupee in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m), form we are tipping her to return to when back at the Valley tomorrow night.
Looking at the William Reid Stakes form we also know the mares have a top record, inflated by the wins of the mighty Black Caviar (2011 and 2013) in recent years.
Because of that we also Vain Queen ($6) at the top of our markets for this autumn, John Sadler’s five-year-old Artie Schiller mare after her third win from five starts over the distance.
She is second-up this time in coming off a fourth to Shamal Wind in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on February 28, a luckless run in a race she probably should have won, and has had the one run for one win at Moonee Valley previously.
Our other single figure fancies for the win are then the returning Rebel Dane ($6) who runs well fresh, smart filly Earthquake ($7), Moody’s Husson mare Peron ($7.50) and consistent Melbourne raider Lucky Hussler ($9) last seen running second to Hucklebuck in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) at Flemington during the Cup Carnival.
Of those our Ladbrokes William Reid Stakes market mover is Earthquake who the punters have backed in from $8.50 to $7.
Earthquake is our Ladbrokes William Reid Stakes market mover so get behind her now before we slash her price further to win on Friday night!
Winner of last year’s Blue Diamond Stakes, the Godolphin-owned Exceed And Excel three-year-old is looking to become the first filly to win since Virage De Fortune (2006).
Since then the only other three-year-old to beat home their older rivals in the William Reid Stakes was Foxwedge (2012) prepared by John O’Shea who also trains Earthquake.
Earthquake has Tommy Berry in the saddle for the first time here and jumps from barrier three, which last produced a William Reid Stakes winner in 2010 when Turffontein got the job done as an $11 shot.
