Wimbledon Update – Round 2

Wimbledon Update – Round 2

The 2015 Wimbledon Championship has entered its second round after two days of play, and has set up a host of exciting matches between contestants of similar form in both the Men’s and Women’s Draws.

Only four seeded players were knocked out of the tournament in the first round of the Men’s Draw, while leading contenders Eugenie Bouchard and Simona Halep headline a list of six seeded women to have their campaigns ended in the first two days of play.

Men’s Second Round

Top seeds Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka breezed through their respective first round ties, and look likely to produce similar results in Days 3 and 4 at the 2015 Wimbledon Championship.

Top Second Round Clash: Novak Djokovic vs Jarko Nieminen

Reigning Men’s singles champion and 2015 top seed, Novak Djokovic was barely troubled when posting a straight sets win over German veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber in the first round and will continue his title defence against the ever-present Jarko Nieminen tonight. Nieminen officially ended Australian Lleyton Hewitt’s Wimbledon career in a five set thriller on Monday night and probably stands little chance of repeating the dose in the second round.

Patriotic Clash: Sam Groth vs James Duckworth

Aussies Sam Groth and James Duckworth were both given little chance for success in the first round at Wimbledon 2015, but each produced monumental efforts to ensure an Australian would reach the third round. Considered the game’s biggest server, Groth was particularly impressive in seeing off 31st seed Jack Sock and remains clear favourite to set-up a likely 3rd round showdown with Roger Federer over the weekend.

Women’s Second Round

With the loss of third seed Halep, Serena Williams and Petra Kvitova’s odds for lifting the Wimbledon trophy have shortened, however if the last few year’s results mean anything, the Women’s title is still more within reach of around 30 players.

Top Second Round Clash: Kirsten Flipkens vs Victoria Azarenka

Kirsten Flipkens is unseeded at Wimbledon 2015 but is a proven performer at the All England Club, having reached the tournament’s semi-finals in 2013, and figures as a great chance of a big upset over the always-dangerous 23rd seed Victoria Azarenka.

Patriotic Clash: Samantha Stosur vs Urszula Radwanska

2011 US Open champion Sam Stosur has been unable to post much of a consistent run of form over the last few seasons, but appears to have found competitive condition leading into her second round match with Poland’s Urszula Radwanska. Stosur remains Australia’s highest-rated player and should have no issue progressing to the third round.
