Legendary Lands – $50 Into $17,280

We all dream about jagging that big feature race double at the start of every Spring Racing Carnival – I’m not looking in great shape with my Set Square/Gallante Caulfield Cup/Melbourne Cup Double – and one of our punters has managed to combine the winners of three feature races and turn $50 into $17,280.

The crazy thing about this multi is that it looks incredible obvious in retrospect, but the impressive factor was that this punter placed this bet on August 29 before all three of these horses were backed into clear favouritism into their respective Group 1 races.

The first leg of this multi was Exosphere to take out the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens on September 12 and this bet was placed just after the son of Lonhro took out the Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m) and was backed into Golden Rose Stakes odds of $4.80.

The complexion of the Golden Rose changed quickly when Golden Slipper winner Vancouver was removed from contention and Exosphere ended up starting the race at $3 and stormed home to record a dominant win.

Our punter stuck with the firing Godolphin stable for the second leg of his multi and he backed Magic Hurricane to win The Metropolitan when he was at a quote of $9 following his win in the Listed Premier’s Cup (1800m).

Magic Hurricane was backed into clear The Metropolitan favouritism when he finished a very close second behind Complacent in the Group 2 Hill Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick on September 19 and he went on to outstay his rivals and record an impressive win in The Metropolitan – which sadly was not enough to earn him a place in the Caulfield Cup field.

This clever punter went into the Caulfield’s Saturday meeting knowing that a Press Statement win in the Caulfield Guineas would deliver him a big windfall and Press Statement started the race as a $2.70 chance – significantly shorter than the $8.50 at which he was backed on August 29.

I am positive that our winning punter would have been slightly worried when Press Statement was taken to the lead by Hugh Bowman in the early stages of the race, but it proved to be a winning move and the three-year-old was far too good for his rivals.

I would like to congratulate this punter on this shrewd bet and I’m sure that I am not the only one kicking myself that I didn’t follow him in!
