In one of our most inspiring success stories to date, one incredibly lucky Spring Carnival punter put down $900 on Caulfield Cup Day in a dual-state, three-leg multi and secured over a quarter-of-a-million in winnings!
Caulfield Cup Day was an absolute cracker in Melbourne, headlined by the win of Kiwi visitor Mongolian Khan who is now Melbourne Cup-bound after taking out the $3 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m).
But even more amazing a story to come out of the racing and betting action was our Legendary Land of the weekend, one punter putting on a three-leg multi that involved Races 7 and 10 at Caulfield and Race 9 at Randwick in Sydney.
With all three of this legend’s selections paying over $5 for a win and all three saluting it was happy days with a $259,875 pay day!
The opening leg of the multi was on Caulfield Race 7 – the Group 3 Moonga Stakes (1400m) – where the Godolphin-raced Vashka backed up from a Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m) to salute at $7 to give our punter the first hint of excitement!
It was a bit of a risk taking Vashka in the first leg as the five-year-old hadn’t before run outside of New South Wales, but our punter was confident the horse could bring his winning Sydney form to Melbourne.
The second leg took things up to Sydney at Royal Randwick for Race 9 – the Group 3 City Tattersalls Club Nivison Stakes (1200m) – taken out narrowly by the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Nayeli ($7.50).
The four-year-old More Than Ready mare only had a nose to spare over runner-up Peace Force, so you better believe our punter was biting his nails in that photo-finish!
It was a smart punt for our punter in that Sydney showdown with Nayeli returning to racing for the first time since May, and the mare boasting an impressive record when fresh of two wins from three first-up runs before her Nivison success.
With just one leg left, the final for our Legendary Land this weekend returned to Melbourne for the last on the bumper Caulfield Cup Day card – Race 10 – the Listed Crown Golden Ale Alinghi Stakes (1100m) where Vezalay got the job done at $5.50 and made the dreams of our punter come true.
Vezalay was dropped down in class for the Listed win on the back of three previous Group 2 or 3 runs, and so while it would have been a nervous wait for our punter, back the step back in grade to give the last in their leg the advantage was a smooth move!
