Ladbrokes Lowdown: Doomben 10,000 Edition

THE BRIEF

As the cold starts to set in across much of the rest of the country, the racing is really heating up in Queensland. And that’s not just a cheesy cliche given the state is experiencing some record May heat; but i digress. Today it’s the group one Doomben 10,000, a Queensland Derby pointer in the Grand Prix Stakes and then we look a little south where the boom entire, RAW IMPULSE goes around a big odds on favourite in the McKell Cup.

THE BIG FIVE

Doomben Race 7, No 2 FELL SWOOP $10k @ $5.50
Morphetville Race 7, no 12 VOODOO LAD $8k @ $2.10
Sandown Race 4, no 6 ANGELOLOGY $6k @ $2.60
Doomben Race 8, no 4 MACKINTOSH $5k @ $2.50
Sandown Race 7, no 6 WHIRLPOOL $2,500 @ $6.00

DOOMBEN 10,000 (Doomben, Race 7)

Aside from the usual suspects in Chris Waller and Darren Weir, Ciaron Maher has been the most in form trainer of recent times and after a stellar Brisbane Winter Carnival last year is back in the Sunchine State looking to grab another group one with his star mare, AZKADELLIA.

One punter is so keen on the Queen of the Turf champion he made four separate bets over four days of $1000 each on her at odds of $3.30 using Ladbrokes Odds Boost function to his utmost advantage.

The ‘standard’ price has never been that high, although it is edging toward the mark as money comes for her rivals. Having opened $2.90, AZKADELLIA shortened to $2.70 but, as of 1pmSaturday is $3 and easing.

FELL SWOOP and DELECTATION, both of whom have form around the world’s best sprinter in CHAUTAUQUA in relatively recent runs, have been the best backed in the past 24 hours. Both have been backed almost a full point in from $5.50 with one punter outlaying $10k on FELL SWOOP at the $5.50 quote and another gambling on DELECTATION grabbing another group one to the tune of $2500 each way, also at $5.50.
If you’re after something of the double figure variety then the best backed roughy has been HOOKED, who has firmed from $31 into $16.

MUSIC MAGNATE has been the most notable drifter, easing from $6.50 to $8.50.

BIG BET

FELL SWOOP – $10k @ $5.50

GRAND PRIX STAKES (Doomben, Race 8)

Two super impressive last start winners head the market here with the Chris Waller trained MACKINTOSH, the favourite at $2.30 following its win at this track a fortnight ago, while SA Derby winner HOWARD BE THY NAME is a well backed second elect.

They also head the market for the Queensland Derby in a fortnight with MACKINOSH currently $2.80 to HOWARD BE THY NAME at $7. Obviously this will be a good guide to that race so we might well see a very different market come this evening.

CYLINDER BEACH is third elect in the Derby and also here today, but has eased for this afternoon’s event out from $7 to $8.50.

MULTIFACETS ($21 into $19) and EAGLE WAY ($10) have also had their admirers as has HARVARD who has been specked from $31 into $21.

BIG BET

MACKINTOSH – $5k @ $2.50

MCKELL CUP (Randwick, Race 7)

Australian opener David Warner is among its owners and RAW IMPULSE is proving a bigger hit with punters for today‘s MCKELL CUP than one of Davey Boy’s cannons into the SCG stands.

The increasingly dominant entire has played with his rivals of late and is $1.65 into $1.50 to do the same today.

There has been very little money for anything to beat it aside for some each way specing for the typically honest Chris Waller runner, HAWKSPUR, who has been $21 into $15.

HAVANA COOLER has eased slightly from $6 to $6.50, while EQUADOR is also on the drift out from $7.50 to $9.50.

I don’t mind a little play at odds for HAWKSPUR but this might well be a race where you sit back and watch a potential champion in RAW IMPULSE.

BIG BET

RAW IMPULSE – $2500k @ $1.65
