It’s said Origin is where legends are made and, in the case of one Ladbrokes punter, he’s written himself into sports betting folklore with a performance which, in some eyes, overshadowed Dane Gagai’s hat trick.
Ironically, it’s his faith in Queensland’s newest representative hero which played a major part in his punting perfection.
The Brisbane man backed Gagai to score the first two tries as part of a special Ladbrokes Origin market, where his $50 investment at $126 netted him a cool $6250.
While his biggest win, it wasn’t his first windfall for the night.
He’d taken Gagai to score the first Queensland try for $200 at $6.50 so was already in front but subsequent bets on the Newcastle Knights star in the ‘first two’ market and also to score two or more tries had the punter delirious with joy.
When he thought his night couldn’t get any better, his remaining bet of Tyson Frizell to score first for the Blues also saluted.
“I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t been sitting next to him at the time,” Ladbrokes Head of Media, Roger Oldridge said.
“He’d told me prior to the game he thought Gagai was a good bet to score for Queensland but how good a bet he actually was, we wouldn’t have dared to suggest.”
So, what does a punter on a hot streak do from here? He uses some of his kitty to go again and guess what? Yep, another collect.
He outlayed $250 on Queensland skipper Cam Smith to win Man of the Match in play at $3.50 to add another $875 to his origin haul.
In total, the man’s Suncorp Sting netted him $10,175 from five bets totaling $850.
“I was actually surprised he didn’t win the half time raffle at the ground the way he was going,” Oldridge said.
