Is it coming home?
England finally won a World Cup shootout to prevail over Colombia in the Round of 16 and they will go into this clash with Sweden as clear favourites to qualify for their first World Cup Semi Final since 1990.
Standing in their way is a Sweden outfit that has conceded only two goals during the tournament to date – both of which were against Germany – and have kept a clean sheet in in five of their past six matches.
Will England keep the dream alive or can Sweden grind out another result? We have analysed both sides and our complete 2018 Sweden vs England World Cup Quarter Final tips can be found below.
Sweden vs England Betting
It should come as no surprise that England have been extremely well-backed ahead of this clash with Sweden and they are $1.90 favourites to win this clash in regular time, while they are $1.44 to progress to the Semi Finals.
A draw at the end of 90 minutes is $3.25 and Sweden are a juicy $4.60 to win in regular time as well as $2.70 to qualify for the next stage of the competition.
How They Got There
England made believers of their fans with wins over Tunisia and Panama before they secured a popular loss against Belgium in their final pool game.
That set up a juicy Round of 16 clash with Colombia and they looked set to progress before they conceded a goal late into injury-time.
They were able to maintain their composure and scored their first ever World Cup Penalty Shootout victory.
Sweden have exceeded expectations to make it to this stage of the tournament and they got out of a tough group that included Germany, Mexico and South Korea.
They were unlucky not to go through the group stages unbeaten and they did enough in their Round of 16 clash against Switzerland to grind out a 1-0 victory.
Recent Meetings
There is an extensive history between Sweden and England and this will be the 25th meeting between the two nations.
There have been nine draws, eight England wins and seven Sweden victories, so historically there is very little between them.
They last met in a friendly in 2012, which Sweden won thanks to four goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and they last met at a World Cup in 2006 when they played out a 2-2 draw.
Analysis
The pressure really is on England and they are expected to qualify for the World Cup Semi Finals, but that will be much easier said than done.
There is a great deal of hype surrounding this England outfit and they have clearly meshed very well as a team, but I’m still not convinced that they are particularly good.
In saying that, they don’t have to be worldbeaters to make the World Cup Final from this side of the draw and they clearly have more attacking flair than Sweden.
Sweden are incredibly well-organised at the back and that is sometimes all you need to make a deep run at a major international tournament.
Unlike other nations, they won’t have issues containing England from set pieces and chances are sure to be few and far between for the Three Lions.
There is little doubt that this will be a low-scoring affair and it really would not surprise if this ended 0-0 after 90 minutes.
I still fancy England to find a way to progress, but there is no value at their current price and the value lies in Total Goals betting markets.
